CJ-7 Top on an 8

Has anyone out there seen a CJ-8 wearing a CJ-7 hardtop?
I had heard of it but never saw one until I did it.It makes it lo-
ok kinda like a Hummer.I call mine a Scrambler extended cab.
I'll admit it takes a little getting used to but with all the extra in-
terior space I cant find a good enough reason to put the 1/2
cab back on.In the 3&1/2 years mine has been done I have co-
me to think everyone elses 8 looks weird,keep your shirts on I
like 1/2 cab Scrambs.I'll keep my 1/2 cab just in case but if I do
it any other way it'll be a full hardtop.I've got pictures if anyones interested.Good Luck,Good Jeeping and God Bless.

Yep, I've seen the '7' top on an '8'. Actually, it's kind of cool.
Rotten Rob, the guy who's running the Rubicon Scramble V this year has done this. If you can find a way to cover the space below the tailhatch door, it would be fine.
I've got every top style and don't use any of the hard tops any more now that I tow the thing. The best looking top for my money is still the factory full hardtop and doors. It's a beast with lots of space for travelling/camping, but a little heavy for hardcore jeeping. The one I have is perfect match for color so I hate to part with it. Jamaican Beige, the color of choice for the majority of scramblers from the factory. Rattle can, Pep Boys dup color: Plasticote, #1114, Sand.

Hey guy good to hear from someone who's seen one.I made
a cover for the open area outta 1/2" marine grade plywood and
covered it with indoor/outdoor carpet.A friend of mine and I gave
it a PsychoFlauge paint job.I think it looks pretty cool,but then I'm

CeeJay, Strange that you write about this as I have been considering this very same set - up for a while now. Was not sure what the final look would be though. Please send me a few pics to help me settle the issue in my mind. May need to visit further if I decide to do it. Thanks.

I saw this set up the other day on a scrambler I've been watching take shape at 4Wheelparts in Redondo Beach, CA. Not my choice for top but to each their own. Jefe, where in SoCal are you located? I've watched your posts but don't have the time or guts to rebuild salvage parts for improvements to my daily driver. Would love to do engine conversions, Trans replacement, etc but tend to order bolt on replacements when $$ isn't more than I can handle (thus my relitively stock fr, rr, 258 w/carter carb and SR4 under new fiberglass tub, perfect interior, OME suspension, one piece axles in M20, Waren hubs, etc.)

I run the 1/2 hardtop with a modified 7 top up against it. The front of the 7 top is cut short, and the door openings are fiberglassed over. It is cut to fit snugly against the 1/2 hardtop. I find that this is a great top, because I use my 8 for work. It's kind of like a cap. In the winter all of the heat stays in the 1/2 top, and it is much lighter than a full hardtop and can be easily taken off by 2 people. If I ever figure out how to post pics, I will.:rolleyes:

I would like to see some pics of your half/full hard top. That is what I would like to do. I have some friends that will give me a CJ7 top.

7 top on cj-8

I have a 84 cj-8 project w/ 1/2 top and steel doors i also have a cj-7 hard-top sitting in the barn. since i have wife & 2 ankle-biters I'm interested in any thoughts on this set-up. Initially i was going to buy a full hard top but if I can use the top I already have it would save $$$. this would please the wife greatly any pics/links/advise/tips etc... would be greatly appreciated.

It's Easy

It's easy to put a 7 top on an 8, all you do is set the top on
as to how its gonna sit and cut small places out in the corners.
Make sure you've got it shoved all the way forward and sitting
properly aligned, mark your body relief cuts and break out the
hacksaw or sawsall.The cuts will have to be 1/2" to 3/4" deep
by approximately 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" wide.Carefully make your
cuts,set it ,the top that is, back on bolt it down and viola. Thats
all thats involved,I know,I drive one and call it my Scrambler X-

thanx Ceejay for the 411. Did you leave the stock roll-bar in place? I'd like to see the pics, especially of your plywood bulk-head. I assume this arangement would also work w/ a cj-7 soft top too?

Yeah man I left the stock roolbar in place,the top clears it with
room to spare.I put a backseat in,carpeted it to the tailgate and
walled it in to the tail.I do not have a bulkhead I just made a very
form fitting cover for the area behind the liftgate to over the tail-
gate.Crude but effective,1/2" marine plywood that was sealed
then indoor/outdoor carpeted to weatherproof.Send me your E-

I had a buddy put a CJ-7 soft top on his scrambler and it worked great untill his wife ended up with it in the divorce-JC:p

I know this is an old thread, but I found it and was very frustrated by the lack of pictures of what this looks like. I found these the other day and thought they needed posting anyhow...
