Just looking into a paint job for my CJ-8 and figure for the price of someone else doing it I can buy the equipment myself and do it. any good ideas for makes or brands. I don't need a full blown setup just enough to do a paint job. Not run a shop. Thanks

You could alway do the body work (if needed) yourself, then get a MAACO or Earl Scheib paint job.
Or get some rattle cans and go for it.

What kind of paint job do you want?

KRYLON

There is only one paint KRYLON-JC:D

I have been looking at buying a compressor and high volume low pressure paint gun, so as time goes I can clean up the Colorado pin stripes from the willows, and pine tree branches. Thanks TK

For me it would depend on what shape the body is in now. If it was a brand new replacement body I would treat it with the best stuff I could find and maybe POR-15 it before applying paint. If you are just looking for a second paint job to give an ugly or old paintjob a facelift, Earl Schieb will probably do just fine. Generally buying equipment yourself isn't worth it unless you're going to do more then one.

I did my body work and paint. If I were to do it again, I would go to Macco or some one like that do it. It's a lot harder than it looks. I painted my jeep 2 times to get it right and I still have a bump here or a run there. Some of the parts got painted 3 times. It does not take much equipment to paint a car. A compressor, a good spray gun, maybe a paint shaker, a neccesity if your gonna have a metal flake, and maybe a few other items.

All in all, its not a big $$ purchse because your not really buying the compressor for just the paint, it will come in handy all the time.

Do the body work, prime it, send it out for paint.

Good Luck

Thanks for the tips. This is what I am looking for. I will be painting other parts since my 91 cherokee was t-boned by a kid visiting the USA from Germany.

Here is a tip back for what it is worth. Steel Horse Tub Bumbers rule. Strapped a 2x6 to the front bumper and the smashed wrecked inside of the cherokee along the floor. then added a 4x4 between them to make a "H" shape. Got in the old 8 and a couple of solid pushes and I can at least open both driverside doors!

Now back to the painting questions. I have a fair body tub. A little rust down by the rocker panel on both sides below the door hinges. Driver side floor boards are rusted through in a spot i found. I was going to weld in new metal there at some point. I have seen replacement sections for sale on the web for around $40.00 per side. I also have new front fenders to put on. Other then that it is ok.

I dont need a paint job that i can see myself 3 miles away in just one that is durable and protects the metal.

Its tought to say with our a picture, but... Here's what I did. Cut out the old bad metal and replace with new. Your gonna need a welder or a buddy whos willing to lend his. Weld and grind, don't get to hot or it will warp. I was able to patch everything and did not need to get replacement panels, just flat steel. Then I skimed it with filler to get it smoth. I used Duplicolor Paint, (Accrilic Enamial) got it from my local parts guy. It cost me $50 a gal. But thats just the start, all said and done I figure I spent $300 to $400 on putting on my paint. Your gonna be suprised how it ads up. I woulden't do it again. Cause I still have to do the doors and tailgate.

I love the color and the way it came out, even with its imperfections.

Hope that helps

$12 paint job

I didn't have to remove anything. Only about 30 minutes of tape job. Be creative, make something up on paper and go with it. If your looking for something more then take the time and do good on the body work. Jeeps are easy cuz all lines are straight, rent a compressor and buy a 40 paint gun!!!!!! Don't be Scared!!

I think I am going to buy the compressor and gun. I have painted a little before, but that was 20 years ago. I think if things go along like they always do. It wont look brand new very long as it is. I like to play in my old jeep.

Now I need to move towards a good paint for a old jeep. Sramblerace I kind of gigglrd when I read where you wrote "Jeeps are easy cuz all lines are straight". I don't think I have ever seen a truly straight body line on a jeep. The original paint jobs were not all that great

No realy back to the subject. I was reading about POR-15. How good is it and how hard is it to work with. I am not afraid to do any of this work. I also have a welder to do the floor boards again. Just need to burn through a few rods to get back in touch with doing a good weld. Once again its been a few years since I did any regular work like this on a 4x4.

Thanks for all of your help and tips.
