Following SPEAR route 1

SPEAR is a southern Utah land access group, primarily ATV/UTVs but their route system is open to most OHVs. Our attempt was to follow route 1 starting in Moab and spending 4 or 5 days piecing segments together to ultimately end up back in Moab. It didnt go as planned but was a lot of fun improvising along the way. Sadly 4WD and SUV magazine is no more or you could read a real report there, meanwhile a very brief synopsis will have to suffice.

2 Scramblers, one scrambler owner in his recently completed MJ, one XJ and an LJ made up the intrepid band of explorers. Actually, we started in May with the two Scramblers and the XJ but we didnt get done then so we picked it up last week with the larger group.

We started in May with Lockhart basin from Moab to highway 211 which goes to Canyonlands NP and the Elephant Hill trail. That was fun, not to difficult and we steadily made our way through the wildflowers to Highway 211, not much to report. Once we crossed 211 though it became ore dicey, SPEAR has maps and track logs available, however a fair amount of additional research is necessary to actually follow it throughout its entire length. We lost it trying to get up onto Bridger Jack Mesa back in May, our alternative plan to access BJM via the Beef Basin road off 211 was cut short due to mechanical issues in May so thats where we resumed the trip in October.

The Bridger Jack Mesa road cuts off the Beef Basin Road a mile or two, or three, from the Junction with Highway 211 and rejoins it some miles later. the BJM road is a narrow, rocky path, with large stretches of shelf road winding through Pinon/Juniper scrub and Pine/Aspen before rejoining the beef basin road.

The Beef Basin road has a turn off to go through Bobby's Hole to Ruin Park and into Canyonlands NP through the uncontrolled back door and over Elephant Hill. We by passed that part though it is well worth doing to make a nice loop off Highway 211. Staying on the BB road we headed for the back side of the Jacob's Chair loop road which is off Highway 95 between Blanding and Hite. Hooking up with the JC road we wound around the red rock monolith to the east leg of the loop road and joined Highway 95, one of the most colorful and beautiful stretches of road in the country in my opinion. East just a couple miles on Highway 95 is the start of the Piute Pass road, a classic SE Utah route if ever there was one.

More to come

Thanks, looks like I forgot to ever update this thread, I'll have to get to it. Have you done much of this area?

Done a lot of Moab and around Lake Powell but have not done the parts you talked about. Seen Jacobs Chair from the hwy (I think?) over by Halls Crossing, right? Been over Elephant Hill 30yrs ago. So much of that area is bucket list stuff.

Jacob's Chair is to the north of highway 95 between Hite and Blanding, very close to Hite and across from the Piute Pass entry from Hwy 95 to the south. Definately bucket list stuff!! just dont wait to long and let the politicians payoff political contributions by closing it all down
