Floorpan replacement, and rocker replacement.

Ok
Ok, after doing all the math, looking into doing a tub swap from a 7 and patching in the rear of an 8, I have decided to try and repair my factory 8 tub. I think I can just get by with replacing the driver and pass side floorpans and leave the trans tunnel. It is still in good shape. With that in mind, I have talked to a few people that said the floorpans do not need to be completely welded all the way arround. Several small welds across each seam is what I want. Then, to go back over that with some epoxy to seal the seams. Keep in mind that the Jeep will have carpet. What is peoples opinion on this for safety in a crash? Will this hold up? Also, I think I can get by with just patching the rockers with sheet metal arround the same thickness. I am good with spot welding, and a grinder. I have done simillar projects with body pannels and never had to use much body filler. My only problem I think will be the location of the under side c-channels and body mount locations. I would want to be sure that every thing stays looking as close to factory on this issue, so the body lines up on the chassis the way it is supposed to. Thanks so much for your input!

Merry Christmas,
Shawn

Floor & Rocker Repair

Go to www.classicent.com They have all the panels you need to do the repairs you are talking about. Personally I think the panels should be welded all the way around. That way you won't loose any stregenth in the tub. Plus it won't let water or anything else in. To me just tacking the panels in and filling the rest with sealer is just half a$$ing it, and asking for trouble later. That's my 2 cents. But like I said check out the Classic Enterprises web site.

Shawn - I just had a local off-road shop do some patching on my Scrambler's pitiful floors. Maybe seeing pictures of their work and the description will help you out. They're located here:

Also, if you get stuck, or just want to ask a question or two, give Lance a call - he's a great guy, and will be happy to answer any questions, or describe why he does things the way he does.

Been there...

The type of repair you did is very similar to the repair I did on my Scrambler. What I did was cut sheetmetal to fit in the areas, and use self tapping screws to get it where I wanted. I then would remove a screw and weld up the hole, thus making a spotweld of sorts. I did it about every 4" or so around my repair panel. if you tried to solid weld it, it would warp and cause you alot of head aches, and generally look like crap.

I am in the process of redoing my floor pans in my cj-8 and I took a chance and ordered the floor pans front and rear for a cj-7 and they were almost a perfect fit. Granted I am a metal fabricator and I have a complete fabrication shop at ma disposal, so that may have made it easier, but the rear floor pan only had about ¼” gap at the most at the worst spot. I did a lot of searching and Quadratec had the lowest prices, all four pieces and shipping were @ $130.

Need some clarification please

When you say rear floor pan, are you talking about the bed or still in the cab area? Just wondering b/c how can a rear CJ7 rear floor pan fit an 8?

Rear as in under the seat to the bulkhead.
I also had bad rust in the rocker panels, I cut about 2" below the jeep stamp all the way back in a strait line and cut a piece of 16ga galvanize and rolled the bottom side to match original. Now that’s allot of stop and go welding.. To control warping I had a 5gal bucket of water and a rag, and welded a couple of seconds and then cooled it down. And I still had a little warping...

Hi guys, sorry it has been awhile since my last post, have had computer problems. I had a question about the braces underneith. My floorpans, braces, body mounts, and rocker pannels are completly gone. About 2 inches under the jeep emblem all the way back to the bed and under the jeep all the way to the other side the same way. All braces, body mounts, supports, all gone. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a very good CJ7 tub. Would it be easier to cut and scab the back of the 8 on the 7? Also, the complete floor of the bed is gone. Thanks

I would think that it would be easiest to get one of the 1-pc. floorplans from Omix-Ada (which has all the underbody supports) for around $300. You can get them through jeepdoc.com.

Don't be ascared....

When I first read your post I thought you were talking about the Scrambler I started with...It looks alot more intimidating than it is....Here is a link to my first thread when I got my first Scrambler...Read it all the way through, I had many of the same issues you have. It took alot of work, but not alot of money.

If you have any questions or need any specific information, we are all eager to help out.

You know the part where you talked about swiss cheese? Well, how about the entire underneith of the jeep? And, the frame has big holes in where the rear spring hangers are. Only on the inside of the frame rails. Since the frame is boxed I assume I could cut out the cancer and weld in new steel? As for the body, it would be easier to list the good parts. Hood, windshield frame, doors, hard top, top two inches of the rocker pannels, both bed sides (quarter pannels), tail gate opening, bulk head, and firewall. Everything elese is TRASH! Now, would it be easier to scab the back half of the scrambler onto a perfect front half of a cj7, or do all the cut work and replacement in the factory scrambler tub? I have never done either so this is why I am asking. It seems to me like it would be easier to make a cut down each quarter pannel (both sides) with the same angel as the bulkhead seam, and then cut arround both fenderwells. Sounds like less work to me?????

Well, I'm looking at replacing several areas of the body myself. So I have taken a little time and made up this little spreadsheet to show the prices of panels at different places online. I have not taken shipping ito account, but for the bigger pieces it will be spendy anyway. Well, I hope this helps some.
