nice Alaskan Postal Scrambler (near Seattle, WA)
A rare find for an original 1984 Alaska Postal Scrambler that is in good condition and stock (except for the passenger seat). I hate to sell it and am hoping to find someone that will appreciate what a unique gem this CJ-8 is. According to the CJ-8 registry this postal has the lowest VIN # recorded (019627) and might have been the first one produced as there were only 230 produced, as told by the USPS, because the difference between this VIN and the highest on the registry accounts for 227. From all of the evidence I've seen they were all produced sequentially and I have not seen any positive proof otherwise.
The body is in very good shape considering what most of these AK postals are usually like after being retired and resold. World cab still has foam lining intact. The driver's side floorboard needs to be repaired as this is where the postal carrier always tracked salt in with their boots after walking on the sidewalks and it has rusted through. There is an area on drivers door panel where it looks like someone applied to much bondo and it is cracking. There is some rust at the rear of the bed where the barn door meets it but this isn't too extensive. The other rust is mostly minor scratches and pitting around the exterior which should be visable in the pictures. The rest of the body and frame is in tremendously sound condition with solid wheel wells and underside. A few bumps and dings here and there which you should be able to notice in the pictures too.
Vehicle has 84,750 miles. The engine and transmission have been recently rebuilt (about ~1,000 miles ago) and run great. The only thing I'd point out in case someone wants to purchase and drive home any great distance is that it has a wobble in the front end somewhere that I haven't had time to diagnose yet - it only becomes apparent once you get up to past 50mph. The gas gauge does not work. I do have a new chrome headlight bezel (you might notice one is missing), Chilton's manual, and Jeep chrome centercaps that will go with as well as a few other little goodies.
Here's the specs that I have on this vehicle:
engine: AMC 258 cid inline 6 (4.2 Liter)
transmission: automatic Chrystler TorqueFlite (not sure of the model - previous owner who had it rebuilt said it was a 727, which is the heavier duty model, but most of these came with the 999 and I don't know how to positively identify)
Transfer Case: Dana 300
Front Axle: Dana 30
Rear Axle: 2-piece AMC 20
Vehicle history: Assembled in the Toledo, Ohio factory and sold to the United States Postal Service in Alaska on special order of 230 custom designed scramblers. Was used in Fairbanks and Anchorage before being retired around 1997 at about 80k miles. A gentleman in Mill Creek, WA then purchased the scrambler and held onto it until 2002. A farmer from Clear Lake, WA purchased it in 2002 with the intention of having his wife drive it for her postal carrying duties, but she ended up passing away before she had a chance to use it so he maintained it and used it for short weekend errands before he had the engine and transmission rebuilt and sold it to myself in 2009. I purchased this AK scrambler because I knew how rare of a find this was and couldn't turn down the idea of having another CJ-8. I am only chosing to sell because my wife and I would like to have kids soon and money is quickly becoming too much of a priority for us.
I live in Arlington, WA (north of Seattle) and can be contacted via enorthstream@aol.com or at 360-631-8851. My name is Eric. I can send more pics on request. First $4,000 takes it, unless I get competing offers and if that happens I will take the best and most serious offer. I haven't started posting on Craigslist or Ebay yet but intend to soon if I don't find a good buyer from this board.

RE: will buy
Yes, it's in good enough shape to make it down there but as I said in the ad...you might have to limit it to about 50 mph to avoid the front end vibration. I've driven it down the highway several times without hesitation. The toughest thing for me about driving it is getting used to the right hand drive!

Look at the front passenger edge of the transmission. If it has a bulge, it is a 727.
The 727
The TF999
Glad Dirty Dave said he would buy it, was considering it for Stephanie. Linda keeps saying I need to buy here something for graduation.

thanks
First I was an active duty soldier for 20 years, then i blew out my knee in Iraq and retired. I am over here as a civillian employee fixing the helicopters that the army does not have the time or the manpower to do anymore because they are streached thin. But thanks anyway, the heroes in my eyes are the kids that go outside the wire everyday and face a sneaky enemy that plants those damm IED's
