So I finally got a Scrambler!

Hey Guys,

This post can serve as my intro to the forum and to kick off a mini restoration I am currently planning.
My name is Bobby Lennon and I am living in Pensacola, FL waiting to start flight school for the navy. I fell in love with scramblers when I was 15 and have wanted one since...I'm 22 now. I recently bought an '82 that seems to be completely stock. It runs well, and the only thing it really needs is a new rear shackle. It has the 258 with 4 speed tranny. I already have it registered and have driven it some.
That being said I have some free time and am making this my new hobby. I'm no expert but do have some experience working on Jeeps so I'm hoping to learn as I go and do as much as I can myself on it. This forum has already been a huge help and I plan on continuing to be on it most nights. The search function works well!
I'm planning on working on it as I go, I don't have the space or knowledge for a frame off restoration. I'm already planning to sand and grind it down to bare metal for primer and paint and good rust protection. I will need a new bed and some welding to fix a few more rust holes. I also plan on using por-15 or something like that on the underside. I also plan on replacing stuff like leaf springs, steering components, body mounts and other little things here and there. I'm not looking for a show jeep, more just a solid, dependable and good looking scrambler!

A few questions...
Is there any particular order I should start all this in? For example should I replace all the mounts and leaf springs before I take care of the rust? I just don't want to have to backtrack and do something twice.

Would new stock leaf springs give me any lift compared to the 27 year old ones I have now? Also they have sets with different amounts of leafs, would a set with 9 give me any benefits over a set of 7? I'm also debating whether to just get a 2 in lift or so.

I plan on using the search function to answer most of my questions, but any input would be great.

I have pics to post. I'll try to post them tomorrow if it's working again.

Thanks,
Bobby

We can't help til you post pictures ;) j/k

I'd suggest putting some serious thought into what you want it to ultimately end up looking like. Things like what do you want to be able to do with it; how much, if any, lift; what tire size; etc. Not that you can't change your mind later, but if you don't want to do things twice, you need to know where you want to go.

The order of things will depend on your ultimate goal and how quickly you can find the parts to do what you want.

Welcome to the forum!

I'll try posting the pics every day this week until they work!

I'm planning on 31 inch tires and very little real wheeling. I'll save that for when I can find a back up scrambler to buy!!

I'm planning on putting in a big order this week from either quadratec or 4WD for a tune up kit, body mounts, 2 inch or so lift kit, and maybe other stuff if anything catches my eye.

PICS TO COME SOON

Welcome!

Welcome to the board  Thre is a great bunch of people on here that have the knowledge for whatever anyone dreams up.

(HINT, Bigwalton's bark is a lot worse than his bite, And, He has a vast margin of knowledge. He can even post pictures, when he remembes to bring his camera )

:D

Welcome to our sickness....

Be a bit careful where you order from. 4WDH isn't what it used to be, I'm seeing a lot of complaints on other forums, they were purchased by another company (a 4WD parts supplier) and just aren't what they used to be. Most seem satisfied with Q'tec. Check out www.jeepdoc.com (aka Krage Motorsports), these guys actually have Scramblers and Morris Jeep parts, I think in Florida. I'm sure there are other good suppliers out there.

Thanks for the input John, I have briefly looked at jeepdoc because when ever I take care of the rust I'm going to need to get a new bed and floor pans welded in

Welcome!

I've always had good luck with Q'tec. And, Summit racing has a lot of stock type replacement parts at good prices.

Lift Question

If I get a 2.5 in suspension lift will I have to adjust anything else like the driveshafts or transfer case?
Thanks

Holy clean tub sides and frame Batman!!!

I think I can see a reflection in the framerail...

The more I try to do at once the harder it is to do, so sorry 2 at a time

More to come later today

Id say so. But I may be biased :D

Hey that looks pretty familar Pete. I'm not sure what color I'm going to paint it yet, I don't think there are many colors out there that would look bad on a scrambler. Pete, do you have any lift on yours? I'm planning on running 31's as well and am curious as to what kind of lift I will need to make it look good. I was planning on around 2 inches of suspension lift.

More pics...

Mines all stock , no lift. Fits the 31s just fine.

As far as posting pics , if you download them to photobucket you can post them in an image like I did. Just go to photobucket.com , open a free account and start downloading them from your computer.

Bobby,
That's a great looking jeep! Thanks for posting the pictures it helps the "to do" list you need.
What you have looks great stock IMO. How to go about restoring is up to you but they don't call it "cancer" for nothing. If you plan on keeping the jeep any length of time, all the rust issues have to be taken care of. The windshield frame, rollbar area behind the passenger side, inspect what's underneath that bed, front floor pan etc all need to have the rust taken care of. Lifts, painting, cosmetics would all be secondary but getting good replacement parts and having it running top notch would be my priority. Mine was 6 colors for years before I painted and Pete's a a great looking scrambler. That's what's great about the scrambler, you can have a bone stock jeep that was like 7k from the factory and have the coolest jeep in town. You've registered on this site, we'll see how long this lasts as a "hobby" :D
