Pulling The Tub Off. Anything I Need To Konw?

I plan on pulling the tub off this weekend and just wanted to ask anyone for there advice...or .02

Is there a thread here about this?

I am assuming that it is only attached to the frame at the body mounts. Once I get those bolts out the body should come off??

I think the front fenders need to be removed first

Any wiring, etc. that I should take off first.

Any suggested direction I should take while doing this??? :shrug:

This is my first frame off attempt so, ANY help or suggestions are welcome. :thumbsup:

Any known problems I should be aware of ???

I am hoping that a few months from now I will not have a dissasembled Scrambler for sale :D

So have you decided to do a full frame off restoration? Are you still planning on keeping it stock?

Search under the Complete Build/Restoration header of the forums. I did this exact same thing a few weeks ago, and there is tons of information under that header- under each persons specific restoration.

Also do a search and simply type in "tub removal". You'll find everything you need.
 
Other than the obvious, I would put a spreader bar across the top of the door jam. I put a piece of 1"x1" angle from one of the dash bolts to one of the holes for the hard top. Just a safety to make sure the door opening doesn't bend.
 
Soak all the body mount bolts in penetrating oil for about a week before even attempting to loosen them. Heating the body mount bolts up with a torch might help, too. I got lucky and only spun one "captured nut". It will not be fun to try and repair these nuts if they break free:eek:
 
And pics, pics, pics. And download them to a computer and flashdrive to keep them (I lost alot of pics when my computer crashed). When you forget how it went together, you can look at them. And you will forget--wiring, mastercylinder, things on the firewall, e-brake cable, etc.

Oh, and maybe as importantly, PICS FOR US! Can't tell you how many times I have referenced other builds to put mine together.
 
Howdy - I just pulled my tub last week. It's in lots of pieces right now. Wasn't too bad at all. Four of us lifted it off and set it on a roller platform I made. (HomeDepot rollers $19 and a couple 2x4's). My buddy called and said he was bringing his girlfriends boys with him to help. His words - "They ain't real smart, but they sure can lift alot." Yeah - a couple 40 year olds and a 17 year old and a 14 year old... Got it up and off no prob.. I had seen this link a while back and thought it was pretty good. Check it out.

Thats my site, an engine hoist is 100% the way to go. One thing I would do from now on is I would weld a support/braces across both door openings and across the tailgate opening to keep those openings true during all the tub moving. The fj40 I am doing now I welded a bed frame rail across the top of the tailgate opening. and angle iron will work but free bed rails from the trash work great. I read a lot of posts about door and tailgates not fitting back properly after pulling and working on tubs so I now figure better safe then sorry.

I attached an image for my fj40 lift. You can see the bar across the tailgate opening. The real old fj40's had door opening more like a cj5 and much more solid then the larger door opening on cj7's 8 and newer fj40's. Better to support it then have issues later. I got away with it on my cj8 but I would 100% weld support braces on next time.
 
I used an engine hoist and ratchet tie-downs hooked to the seat belt outer bolts, and one front to back to level. No problems.

cjgoode, why didn't you tell me that trick about welding in the rail before removing the tub?
 
I did not learn about how important it COULD be to weld in the support braces until after you had your tub off. Really critical if you tub has been made weaker by rust, but smart to do anyway.
