First the roll bar then the winch, now the fans/radiator......>This is looking like the how not to build something portion of this thread. Carry on and stay safe around that thing and nice score on the AX!

Somehow I was too upset in dealing with bad things I had to go out and ease my suffering with something else... lol!

Funny thing is there might be another one on the way... for 6 months I couldn't touch a parts Jeep and/or project and in the last week 4-5 showed up in a decent price range.

1 I missed out on that was an unreal deal, but you have to be able to jump and go in those situations.

I have to call the guy back today and find out some more details as I saw a few things that don't look all that stock.

This is the definition of what is inside when someone tells you "ran when parked"

Happy Thanksgiving to all... a day late :)

I was busy moving/tearing down stuff... it was a beautiful day to get stuff done in the morning and then watch some football later on.

I was able to snag yet another of someone's projects at a reasonable price.
I was asked in a different channel why I would buy something that isn't all CJ.
Well, here were some of the goodies.

20221124_143228_resized.jpg

I removed the hard top/doors already as well as the interior and right back up on CL it went.
Digging in more, this is a later YJ that is on a CJ frame.
It has a 8.8 rear from a explorer with disc brakes.
It has a Dana 30 up front, but they are stuffed with 4.10 gears.
Frame was all redone/repaired by a certified welder and looks pretty good.
The engine is a 4.0 fuel injected later YJ motor.
The rest is all YJ (tub/rollbar/windshield frame).

Now, inside they kept CJ stuff.

Digital gauges... not sure what they are yet.

20221124_143236_resized.jpg

It has a funky carbon fiber wrap on it as well... something different.

Also, buried in the pallet of sheet metal and parts was another Superwinch to match what I got last week. Not sure if it works or not.

Finally got it all pushed in and will tear it down in the order that they have arrived.

Oh, the tires... they are brand new, never used older style 33x12.5x15 BFG KM2's... unfortunaly it sat outside, so a few small spots of dry cracking, but they will make great rollers or offroad only tires.

All in all, there is a lot going on here, which is why I jumped on it.
I am not a YJ expert by any stretch, but there is a lot of value here.

Not sure at all on the axles, but anything around here with > 4 in the axle ratio sells pretty quick.
Having rear discs? Even more intriguing.

NOTE: The only really odd thing I found so far is that it has a T4/Dana300 combo behind the 4.0L. Not what I would have expected, but that is what is there. It also came with 3 totes of parts I haven't even opened yet.

CB, it seems that maybe your business model is “evolving” as these things become available…….

That is an interesting YJ. With the Dana 300 did they swap in a CJ Dana 30 front to switch to passenger drop? It almost looks like the front is 5 on 5.5 while the rear would be 5 on 4.5 from the explorer. That 8.8 is a pretty good swap option.

Stock Dana 30 from a CJ, so passenger drop... it really has a lot of good... but yes, the rims are different front to rear, so if you need a spare, you really need 2 if you are wheeling and fear popping a tire.

I finally broke down and got the air system up and running so I can run the plasma cutter... the steel on this thing is just all over the place.

20221206_181138_resized.jpg

I got the whole back half cut off with the help of the plasma, saw-zall, cut off wheel and a lot of hammering.

20221206_181208_resized.jpg

This picture really shows what I am up against... the whole Jeep is rusty... badly, but then it is outer skinned plated with 1/4 or 5/16" steel... which is right at the limit of the machine.... sometimes it works great and other times it won't get moving.

Anyway... gas starting leaking all over from the lines, so I called it for the day.

and finally the prize... 1986 Dana 44 with 3.31 open gears.

I need some advil...

This wasn't what I expected.
I don't do much with electric fans since CJs didn't come with them, but I would think attaching them would be different than this.

This is essentially zip ties through the radiator.... I don't get it.
Bent a lot of fins to get it in there... surprised there is no leaking.

It's not how I would do it - but, it's not unheard of: https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/imperial-mounting-kit-system-226201/6014844-P

OK... so I did some playing around and things are cutting a lot better.

New tip, removed the drag cover and put on the smaller one and now just free handed it.
I used the grinder to get a really good ground closer to the cutting area.
I purged the air tank for any traces of water as well.

Once that was done, it was great... until I touched the tip to the cutting area and it clogged/blew out the hole.
So a new tip and then we were in business.

Downside is that now I have no more tips... so ordered some more up.
It also really needs high air pressure... which is fine, but a lot of the research I did shows lower pressure for these machines.

Pic isn't great (very smokey conditions last night), but you can see how the cuts are and how it sliced... there was NO air movement last night.
Almost creepy. Desperately need a fan when you do this... had to wait for a while for it all to dissipate... very smoky.

Anyway, the AX-15 has the adapter plate (glued) onto the D300 with some grey RTV that I have never seen before.
It did NOT want to come off, but finally got it removed.

All in all, I am seeing the finish, most of the heavy plate welded junk is gone and I don't have a ton left.
