My '81 Scrambler tried to kill me...

Hey! Look what showed up. A complete 1981 CJ 8 rolling frame. Perfect to fit under the 'Scrambler That Tried To Kill Me'. It's under another thread so I should probably update this one, but I also bought a complete '84 Scrambler that I've been using as my daily driver. The day I brought it...

My '81 Scrambler tried to kill me...

Definitely holler when you head out this way. Even if you don't bring an 8, I will have some sort of Scrambler running by then. Plus we also have the '77 CJ5, side by sides etc. Always an extra seat available to see the trails. Guarantee to show you some cool stuff that no one sees. Before the...

My '81 Scrambler tried to kill me...

Yes, when I started restoring mills I decided that if I was gonna put the time and money into a mechanical device 30'-40' in the air I made sure they were completely restored to pumping/working order. Sometimes that was really hard chasing parts for a windmill that hadn't been made in 80-100...

Summer definitely thins both the locals and touristas out.

I like the way you think! It's only been 10 days but I already really miss driving the 8. We'll figure it out one way or another. I see you live in Woodway, TX. One of the last central Texas windmills I restored was in McGregor, TX. Beautiful area. Yes, people either tend to love or hate this...

My '81 Scrambler tried to kill me...

I completely understand. I was working on making the STTTKM mechanically safe and sound but not worried at all about the paint. Dirt roads and cacti made paint and appearance priority at the absolute bottom of the To Do list.

My '81 Scrambler tried to kill me...

Yes, I'm mostly 'retired' from the windmill business but I have several collectible ones that I plan on restoring and standing up...after I get a Scrambler or two back on the road. 😆 This is an Eclipse Windmill I restored for the Pioneer Farms living history organization in Austin, TX. I have a...

My '81 Scrambler tried to kill me...

All good advice. You guys have been there and done that and I can appreciate your experience and your input. I'm surprised that so many of you would pass on the project 8. I understand where y'all are coming from, just surprised as I've read a few buckets to project threads. My moniker is...

My '81 Scrambler tried to kill me...

Thanks for all the advice and help. I’m still trying to decide on what works best with my skills and money ( not a lot). I was mainly thinking of buying neighbors Joop tub and frame and then selling off other parts. I thought rust free OEMs were hard to come buy and the aftermarket tubs don’t...

My '81 Scrambler tried to kill me...

Thanks for everyone's input. I really appreciate all the help and y'all are a wealth of knowledge. I don't have an absolutely exact plan yet, but some things are starting to fall in place. Of course, best laid plans of mice and men...and all that. Plan A, Remove the rear axle, of the Scrambler...

My '81 Scrambler tried to kill me...

Why is that? Because of better quality? You still question integrity of original frame?

My '81 Scrambler tried to kill me...

Still working on processing what happened, how bad it is, and options. Drivers side: Passengers side: This was my daily driver 75 miles every day. 8 miles of the rough dirt roads. Thanks for all the info and well wishes. The more I think about it, the more I realize how lucky I was...

I’m not familiar with the chiefwaho plates. A quick google search and it looks like they are made/sold by an individual?

My '81 Scrambler tried to kill me...

A little background. I bought the Jeep in El Paso, TX and it was licensed in New Mexico...but I do believe this might have been a Colorado Jeep originally. Now that I’m over the initial shock, I’m leaning towards a Safe-T-Cap quick fix and then buying a new frame. I really like this 8 and now...

My '81 Scrambler tried to kill me...

I noticed some stress cracks on the frame a couple of weeks ago. Decided to keep my eye on them to see if they got worse. Pulled in the driveway this afternoon, got out and was excited to start installing my hard doors and top when I noticed this. I feel very lucky to be writing this from the...

How to install an ACME top?

There are two latches that look like they attach to the inside windshield. There is a hole on each side of the back hatch. Sorry this picture is turned sideways. Any advice on how to mount it?

How to install an ACME top?

Some inside pictures. If this was a modification job it is excellent. So good I cannot identify a seam. Photos show inside, sunroof above and back hatch below.

Thanks for appropriate caption. A friend texted me the photo without the caption.

How to install an ACME top?

This looks like my top except the fact that mine has a sunroof and the back opens.

How to install an ACME top?

I might be wrong, but think this is a solid top that has not been cut. When I said it might be for a 7 I was referring to the tops that Acme made for 7’a that turn then into a Scrambler like vehicle. I think what y’all are seeing is a stress crack. But I’m absolutely guessing. Some more pictures.
