'84 Postal - Do What?!?

The new job keeps me busy so progress is slow but it’s still progress

Installed the windshield today after work and began the infamous “cowl seal squeeze”. Essentially a rite of passage for CJ folks

This is a Fairchild seal which if you can’t get OEM I believe the Fairchild one is the best.

Now each day this week when I’m home from work I’ll do the ‘ol loosen up and pull method

You’re going to rock the top on this one? That thing should be on the other side! :rotfl:

Top install is halted due to having to get the windshield seal to compress enough / put dash together. I’m SO ready to get the top off my floor!

@bigwalton Am I missing something obvious with having the tire mounted in that location? I used a factory mount and from eye-balling it the top should clear it.

I'm curious what the loosen up and pull method is exactly. I have the same seal and have at least a quarter inch gap between the top of the windshield and the top of the hard doors. I was considering heating up the seal with a heat gun or pot of hot water and then pulling on the windshield frame to close the gap, but I'm afraid I'll crack the glass or something.

Visibility if you have the top off. Created a big blind spot. Top on, you’re screwed anyway :rotfl:
LOL. Yea I knew I’m screwed with visibility just thought I was missing something more!

I get a buddy to stand in the Jeep and hold the windshield in position while I loosen the 4 bolts on the brackets. Then he slowly and evenly applies pulling pressure until it doesn’t seem to want to move anymore and then I snug the 4 bolts back down. Rinse and repeat often

Getting a dismantled Postal top back on…. I don’t wish this evil on anyone

Ok. Drama queen in check - it wasn’t horrible but not what I imagined. I still have the 6 door pieces to install and final gap alignment but not being able to put the windshield up for the final time has stopped me in my tracks. Gotta get under dash complete and of course the dash itself then I’m back at it getting the top all lined up.

Even though it’s mid September and still in the 80s I found myself singing “it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas “ while working with all this Olympic White

Making a run to the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry next week

Do you need any pictures or there’s
That would be cool. I’ve seen a few pics of the one they have but nothing in detail. It’d help all of us to see how that one was done !

Putting that too back together and getting all the gaskets in place is a massive PITA. I generally went with “good enough” because it got old fast. Doing it solo is next to impossible. Only so much better with another person.

Good luck!

Fortunately I have a good friend / neighbor that we swap labor on projects. While he’s a MOPAR guy with some amazing cars he’s also got a fairly original 81 CJ7 Renegade so he gets the Jeep thang

Did you purchase a new seal that goes between the top and the top of the windshield frame? If so where did you find it?

Nope. Surprisingly it’s in great shape

So….. If you curse me please do so nicely.

The Postal is GONE. I sold it in its current state to a guy who’s going to build @bigwalton ‘s dream Postal. Bigger lift, V8, lockers, winch bumpers, rear swingout, etc etc.

As much as I wanted to be the guy who finished this one the numbers made sense. I wasn’t planning on keeping it when complete and the deal we made essentially gives me the margin I expected when I finished it. Bittersweet moment watching it leave but it was the right decision.

Out of respect for the new owner I won’t reveal too much info. I told him about this site so hopefully he joins and continues the build for us. At a minimum he said he’ll share pics and details for me to post. He owns 2 CJ7s, a J truck and a Scrambler already.

She just left to head due West for about 1700 miles. I’ll miss her.

Sorry for your loss you put a lot more than $ into that. I loved following the build.
