You do. The R stands for replacement. Cummins built it intending it be a motor to replace other motors.

That's actually incorrect, from my understanding. They are MARKETING it as a "repower" but it was actually designed and developed to be the diesel option for the Nissan Frontier a while back. It never went to full production, and Nissan only ever launched the 5.0 Cummins in the Titan after assessing market demands for diesel trucks, figuring that a diesel "mini truck" wouldn't sell as well as the full size seeing how the 3/4 tons dominated the field at the time. Cummins then took all the R&D (and possibly castings they already had in mass) tweaked the packaging and marketed it as a crate motor instead. Luck for us they did, I suppose. Now if they just had a Harbor Freight coupon for them....

It's a shame they didn't go that route with Nissan as well. I may have considered that. The only reason I've got the Silverado and my wife's Tahoe is that they both offer the smallest diesel I could get in this country. Both are automatic though sadly as they simply don't offer the manual to Americans.

All my Toyotas were diesel in Australia. When I went to look at the Hilux here (called the Tacoma and about 20% larger than its cousin), I was surprised it only came with a I4 or V6 petrol. I test drove one and had to keep checking to see whether the hand brake was on. It was SO sluggish. To add to insult, the fuel economy was half what I got in Australia. So, I've not owned a Toyota since.

My father-in-law's diesel Rav4 with the 6 speed gets 45 mpg and is fast as a fast thing. The Rav here gets half that and only comes with two pedals. I don't get it.

I don’t get it. = EPA. Soon enough you won’t be able to get a petrol either.

And yet in Australia they are finalising a hydrogen system for any current direct injected diesel making it basically zero emissions. Hydrogen is manufactured from the h2o in the air using solar energy. Thus, green energy with a current and readily available asset to use readily until we change over gradually to electric.... eventually. Maybe.
Here we put all our eggs in the electric basket; getting our nickel and lithium primarily from China and spending trillions changing over to battery cars and installing the infrastructure to power all those batteries.... batteries made after strip mining hundreds and hundreds of acres of the earth to obtain the unknown amount of minerals needed for this vast changeover. Brilliant.

You are preaching to the wrong people. DC and Cali are running the program. And it’s probably 100,000s or millions of acres to get what is needed. I’m with you 100%. They are in Ramming Speed mode right now.

Well, the '8 lives. Got the top on, wife scrubbed/cleaned out the floor inside, got the new seats installed and the spare tire rack and tire back on. Drove it to our PO Box and it ran great after 10 months. Just need to order a new tool box and a tailgate seal and it is basically done. Always some small nitpicky items to do, but I am happy with the way it turned out. Pictures to come later of the completed deal.. Next major deal is rebuild the circa 1974- 8274 winch I have to rebuild and mount on the front for a very correct rig... :)

Thanks!! I just spoke with Brad. Great dude. He's actually got a 2.8 in stock and can do it in May so I booked the slot.....

Cheaper than a new diesel Heep and with my AX15. Can't wait for May! 90 days to do the swap start to finish.

Oh good lord, it's so pretty 😍

What's the paint code?
Not sure. The can I had from when it was redone in '99 called it Alfa Romeo Slate Blue Poly. My guy ended up taking the glove box door off and using it to get the match made as we didn't paint the inside dash, etc as it didn't need it...

OK, this will be the last of the pics. Got my toolbox mounted yesterday. It is a little larger than the previous one that was in when I bought the Jeep in 99. Not cheap, but now we have a secure place for our soft side athletic type travel bags. Thinking we may just drive it to Texas for S&G's this spring...
