I'm planning the paint phase of my 81 Olympic white base model. I believe it was a single stage paint, wasn't it? Does anyone recommend a brand for a good single stage? Now for the top paint. I sanded through the orange paint on my top that the previous owner put on and found Brown paint then the grey primer underneath. What were the available Brown paints they had then. I'm having a hard time telling what color it would have been as I seem to get through the original color quite quickly. Was there more than one Brown they used for tops? Does anyone have the paint codes for them? I referenced the paint code sticky but that only addresses body and interior colors.

Just one white that I know of. Was it the actual amc Olympic white? It's not a super bright white anyways.

I believe this question has been asked before and iirc no one could find a paint code for the top specifically.

I dug for couple days and couldn't find a color code...so just went to the depot and got a custom mix.

The picture below is of 1976 AMC Dark Cocoa Metallic H4, contrasted with the full door appliqué decal from Phoenix Graphics. The appliqué seems to match up really close with the original color tops nutmeg tops, although in many instances the nutmeg top and interior aren't perfect matches. Below that you will see a recipe for creating PPG paints that color matches the appliqué ... you should be able to get it made locally following this recipe.
