Project "AZZ DRAGGER"

Actually... no. I wasn't very smart when we went to Sand Blast... Both my spare drive shafts, including the very awesome, one of a kind, super rare, Moab Special driveshaft was left at home. Given the track record of the shafts that I have gotten from Tom Woods (garbage, made in china parts, for those who dont know) I should have had at least 2 spares. We did make it home from Sand Blast, however, did have a couple problems. Electric fan motor quit AGAIN. I think Tom Woods makes them... The motor only lasts about 1 year. Last year one quit on the way back from the Nationals. Of course they are not a common part so I had to special order them. Ordered 2 just to have a spare. Jeep is also getting HORRIBLE mileage (compared to usual), and the front end is loose. have to check it when I get a chance...

I think the "Moab Special" DS will outlast a Tom Woods, those U-Joints were a joke:eek: At least it was a good learning experience:thumbsup:

Glad y'all made it back from Sand Blast in one piece:thumbsup:

Do you think the wheel bearings are loose again? You put new TRE on in Moab, IIRC:shrug:

Glad to see at least one of the "cross country multiple time Reds" was there to represent:thumbsup::thumbsup::wave:

And while you're at it, get that MAF sensor working-

MAF works and has been street tuned with it. (last year).

haven't checked it yet. But I have a feeling it may be the other 2 TREs or the kingpins starting to go.

Hello all, it has been over a year since my last update...
Been getting stuff ready for Sandblast 2025. Drove her to work yesterday (35 minutes on highway doing about 80mph). Haven't been happy with the tune since swapping the cam in years ago. Finally gave in and booked a dyno session for July 10th... So right now, not including today, 5 days left till dyno day. Last night when I was driving home, after getting of the highway, there is a set of traffic lights that take an eternity to change. I was sitting there waiting, when I noticed a very loud whining noise... Turns out the throwout bearing, which I haven't trusted for a couple years now is likely almost dead. Plus, the clutch linkage must be out of adjustment since it seems like the throwout bearing is always in contact with the clutch fingers. So last night I decided to order all new clutch, flywheel, and associated parts. I haven't checked anything yet on the Jeep, so hopefully I got everything in need.
Parts are supposed to ship on Monday July 7th and be delivered on July 9th. Cutting it close for dyno day. Will see what happens. If I miss dyno day, I should at least have her ready for Sandblast!
Anyways, No pictures, just story. Maybe I'll update before next year! :ROFLMAO:

Also, I have begun collecting parts to change over to 5.13 gears. But that will be a winter project.

So, I checked the throwout bearing. It wasnt that (at the time I inspected it). I decided to just leave everything as is and hit the dyno. Tuner said my tune had a lot of questionable things done to it, which he fixed. I could hear the difference right away, which was awesome...

245 HP @ 5000 rpm
269 lbs/ft @ 4100rpm
Dyno pull was done in 3rd gear (1.71:1) and not 4th (1:1) because they were worried about the drum speed on dyno with 37" tires.

Then I drove her home. Tune is a billion times better. So much happier. Maybe I'll get better fuel mileage, but highly unlikely with how I drive.
While driving home, stopped at a traffic light, whirring noise was back... So then this happened.

Decided to change flywheel, clutch and inspect transmission. Ordered a bearing kit for the NV4500. In the meantime, yesterday I started to install the new flywheel and clutch. Got the fly wheel installed and pulled out the clutch.... wrong clutch. Turns out the part number I used are completely different clutches between one company and the next.
LUK 04-232 is not the same as AMS 04-232. The LUK one is a 9" clutch, AMS is the 11" that I need. Ordered that, should get here tomorrow.

So then, I figured I should tear into the transmission. First step, take off input shaft housing. Found this...

After scratching my head and banging it off the wall, @spankrjs called me and we likely figured out the whirring noise that started this entire process. The throw out bearing was binding on the input shaft housing, causing it to remain in contact with the clutch fingers.
New input shaft housing ordered yesterday, should arrive Thursday. Leave for Sandblast this weekend. Hopefully no more hiccups, not enough time to order anymore parts to get here before we leave. Also, have to work 12 hours, today, tomorrow and Thursday, so not much time get this done. fingers crossed...
