Yup, I'm back...been quite a while, nice to see a lot of the old Scram-Fam still active. I've been out of the game for quite a while, so I'll quickly catch up. Recovered from my bout with cancer, relocated to OH, job started to go sideways but recovered, built a shop, job went WAY sideways and I got let go about 8 months before the company went under (long, sordid tale), was unemployed for about 9 months, new job was pretty good but major element (pay vs. amount of work I was doing compared to everyone else) stunk, so I bailed when another opportunity came up and have been at the new job for 3 years now (IT at a Vo-Tech high school...pay isn't great, but there's almost no stress & no demands on my time outside of work hours). Vacationed in St. Croix last Summer and we fell in love with the place & decided we would work on relocating in the next 5-10 years. My father passed unexpectedly in February and between him & my mother, left my sister & I a decent inheritance, so we decided to speed up our plans. Toward that end, I decided the adult thing to do was to pull the plug on my existing Scrambler, Jeepskate II/XL as it was just too much for where we're heading and I bought a nearly stock '83 Scrambler to resto-mod into a cruiser (Anders, who did all of the tube work on Jeepskate II/XL is buying it from me, so it will live on in some form). This will not be a drawn out affair like my previous builds, so I have to break with some of my cheapskate/jeepskate ways and crack open the wallet...this is further fueled by our return trip to the island over Thanksgiving where we put an offer on a house which is now under contract. The kicker: the bottom level is a garage/workshop that's almost as big as my outbuilding...pretty much unheard of on the island and I lucked out that my wife fell in love with the house (2 master suites & a custom gourmet kitchen). The plan is to move Summer 2019.20170307032724990382000000-o.jpg20170307032336977358000000-o.jpg22459462_10212338899326270_4126427442576807088_o.jpg

Test fitting & teardown. Using the Fly-N-Hi front bumper from 1 Last 7, a Smittybilt XRC rear bumper (had a couple of Precision Machining students redrill it for me since it's built for YJ/TJ's), and Olympic Reversa-bars.24302465_10212713363927651_7781322218904636950_o.jpg24293998_10212713535691945_1601172923456576581_n.jpgJPSK8_plate.jpg

In stock trim, it's a base Scrambler with the GM 151 4-banger backed by a T-176. Planning to drop in a rebuilt 360/T-999 combo, tilt column, power brakes, Old Man Emu 2.5" lift YJ springs, Crabtree hangers & shackles, HD steering mount & steering shaft, steering brace, 33" Cepek Fun Country's on old school OEM aluminum slots, 3.73's, rear Trac-loc, rear discs, LED headlights, stainless steel brake & fuel lines, OEM rocker trim, OEM wooden rails, etc. Still deciding on color...right now it's between Toyota TRD cement grey and '50's Chevy Tropical Turquoise and decals...year correct Scrambler or old school Renegade.25487595_10212829775477867_4076778806534612954_o.jpg25439898_10212845309066197_7507246792990524375_o.jpg

Solid progress today. Body is off as well as the shocks and I started on the brake hoses & lines. I'm going to shoot for completing the teardown tomorrow. Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah!!!25734074_10212872766632619_1438731894556186310_o.jpg25588161_10212873200083455_4712278267762441011_o.jpg25587055_10212873201843499_2496401137578014500_o.jpg

Welcome back. Kept up with most of this on FB but good to see you posting on here. Hadn't seen the house, that's awesome!

Sorry again on your dad's passing. You know I can empathize.

Thanks, Eric!! I had to contain myself when we walked through the house and Aaliya turned to me and said "I think this is the one." There was another one that we had to jump through a few hoops to see...was a bit further back from the beach but had a little bit better view since it was higher up, but like the vast majority of the houses that have a view, the build site was carved out of the side of a hill so what you got was what you got as far as usable land and it had no garage nor space to put one. Thankfully the interior had no personality...looked like someone just cruised through Home Depot. The one that we're buying is completely custom & was originally built & owned by a contractor who actually came out for the second showing and walked around with me and went through all of the construction details..the place is built like a bunker. There actually is a Jeep shop and Jeep club on the island and the shop owner has a Scrambler and does Jeep tours.

It's been brutally cold the past couple of weeks, so there's been little progress. I brought the dash, fenders & half doors up to the house and stripped them down in the basement. The rebuilder should be done with the trans today or tomorrow (had to crawl under the other Scrambler on Sunday in the freezing cold to pull the t-cases and get the tailhousing off of the trans where we were using it for mock up so that they can set the endplay & finish up). Ordered up the u-bolt yokes, Novak master rebuild kit & aluminum pan for the Dana 300 and will be dropping the 360 off at the rebuilder soon (due for a snowstorm this weekend along with another temperature drop). Found a shop that can dip the frame to clean it, so I'll haul it out there after I get the drivetrain out & repair the body mounts.

Oh
Is the shop that can dip the frame in Ohio. I ended up taking the 2 project I'm doing to Indianapolis, In. They did a excellent job with the cleaning (including what the previous owner missed when he sandblasted the frame and welded pieces in) and well worth the hassle and expense.

What shop in Indianapolis did you use?

Got another break in the weather, so I finished the teardown over the weekend. Picked up my t-case today...full rebuild with Novak master kit & aluminum pan. Could have done it myself, but figured my time could be better spent elsewhere and the trans shop could get it done during the week while I'm at work. Sold the 30/20 combo, the T-176 w/GM bellhousing and the tub are up for sale.

Yes, they're in Toledo, OH not far from Willys-Overland. http://www.americanmetalcleaninginc.com/services/automotiveservices.html0121181421.jpg0123181722.jpg

Oh
They would have been closer to me than Indy. If they do as good a job it's money well spent and will make the jeep last longer than sand blasting. Most of the major rust comes from the inside out. Sandblasting doesn't get the inside. Well worth it.
