Steering Column Favorite Grease

As I continue with rustoration, I pulled the column for de-rusting and paint. Everything is apart, and looks good except the two upper bearings were very dry. The ignition assembly worked fine, etc, but 42 years called for maintenance.

What grease does everyone swear by? I cannot figure out a replacement for the yellow waxy grease that I removed. Most online rebuilds I have stumbled across use red bearing grease.

I also don’t want to overgrease and get stuff stuck in the grease, if there are any good tips.

Lastly, the only thing missing when I repaired the horn issues long ago was the factory washer holding the steering wheel, under the nut. I just drilled out a hardware store washer to fit. Is this supposed to be a special thick washer?
