So I have started taking pics of Vin numbers when I see scramblers. However when I go to decode them I get hung up on the fifth digit. The decoding charts give the option of the fifth digit being an A, B, M, or N and is to denote whether the transmission is automatic or manual and how many speeds. However I am finding E's and F's in the fifth position. Can anyone explain this?

mine says E for the fifth digit(automatic, column shift) and its actually should be a B (automatic, floor shift) so its not 100% accurate in my case or they ran out of B stampings and thought E was close enough...

My Tan '84 Scrambler = "F" - 5 speed manual transmission
My Red '83 Scrambler = "M" - 4 speed manual transmission
My Green ' 83 Scrambler = "N" - 5 speed manual transmission

All 3 of mine are correct, well, at least till they were swapped out:thumbsup:

I wonder why they had two separate letters to denote the same thing, for example, both F and N denote 5 speed manual floor shift transmissions
