What is this? And should it have a hole in it? My Jeep often sounds like a bullfrog. I wonder if this is why.

That is the exhaust check valve for the air pump. It either needs to be replaced or removed and sealed off-

Like mysunnshine said that is one of the check valves for the Pulse Air System to prevent exhaust gases from pushing back into the air cleaner. Check out this site: https://gleebledorf.com/pulseair.html

You probably have two of them, one on either side of the block in about the same position. Looks like you are missing the air valve and hose that connected back to the air cleaner. When they system worked one side fed air to the downpipe below the manifold and one fed air directly to the cat.

That is great info. Thank you. There is a hose that no longer has a home that is hanging out next to the broken check valve. After reading your attachment, the jeep makes a bubbling noise. I call it bullfrog the article refers to it as a trombone. I think it's one in the same. Thank you again. I'm going to investigate further.
