About 2yrs ago I was at my old job working with a new guy. He had seen me drive my Scrambler and CJ5 to work. One day he said, " So your into old Jeeps"? Yea, I guess you could say that. He said my father in law has a bunch of old Jeeps. So my interest was peaked. I question this guy a bit but he doesn't know anything at all about old Jeeps or the models. He said, " next time I'm over there I'll snap some pics". So he shows up 2 weeks later says, " here's some of what he has". The man had a bunch of commandos some with the truck top, some with full one even made into a wrecker but this pic really floored me. IMG951042.jpg

How awesome and depressing at the same time, knowing that they're just sitting there wasting away and not being enjoyed by enthusiasts.

After my jaw dropped, I inquired about buying these old Jeeps. He said, " I really doubt he would sell anything, he's kind of a private guy". Next time we discussed it he said no he would not sell anything. I said the white one appears to be a Hurst Edition, it was really rare. He said he had 3 Hurst editions. The blue one was also one and their was one more. He also said he had one of the first Corvettes, said he wasn't sure if it was a 53 or 54? Now I was really blown away by all this. I said I bet their hasn't been 3 together since they came off the production line. I kept inquiring about them, wanted to see them. I never got anywhere, I asked what his plan was for them he said I doubt he will ever do anything with them? I said, keep me in mind, he agreed. I had more pics but they were on another phone that laid down. This was the only pic I was able to save. I meant to share this a long time ago but I thought the pic was lost.

What a shame. Those types of people make me mad. I wish he would have at least kept them in a dry barn or something.
He said the Vette is in a barn but you can't tell it's even there their is so much stuff packed around it. Said he had been it a couple of times and didn't realize their was a Vette in there. It had never been mentioned or anything. I wish I still had the other pics, their was a bunch of commandos. The one that was made into a wrecker looked terribly rough. He said he uses it often to move or haul stuff around his property. He must have gotten into Commandos early on.

The white one appears to be a Hurst model jeepster, which could be worth a fair bit of money restored.

The blue one may be as well, but painted? Improbable to have two under the same tree.

I love this line " Improbable to have two under the same tree. " its great Walker! very true they only made like under 1000 of these, going from memory, and one year only. They are quite ugly in my opinion. I do like the regular ones tho 67-71.

The Hurst Jeepsters was built in 1971, and this is from the owner of the Hurst Jeepsters pictured above

“We argue about that all the time. They planned for 500, but we know they fell short because they didn’t sell very well, so I usually tell people somewhere between 250-500. “

my friend Lee Tidwell knows a guy in Asheville North Carolina, that has five Hurst Jeepsters and 30 others just sitting and rotting away and he won’t do anything with them

Must be that 'hoarder' mentality. That's a great idea for a show on the Motor trend Channel, Automotive Hoarder Intervention. Although, I doubt they'd be very successful in getting them to release a few.

I always wanted a commando, I've come close to owning one twice. Right before I bought my Scrambler I just missed getting a one owner with very little rust for 3 grand. I had the cash but a guy had gave a deposit right before I showed up. Oh well, guess it wasn't meant to be. It's on my bucket list to own one.
