Aluminum Rocker Trim - T-bolt question

Any of you guys ever made any of those little t-bolts that go in behind the aluminum trim strips that run along the rockers? We need a few.

Anybody know a place to buy them for a reasonable price?
 
Search the old threads.

I seem to remembers a few years back there was someone or some place that had them so that you could buy them.

Not a big mover, but I am sure there is someone out there that was making them.

That's kinda what I was afraid of.

Those stainless ones are nice. Bummer if sold out.
 
I think some people have used elevator bolts that have the head/flat part cut down to fit the channel. That's what I'm gonna try when I take mine off to paint the Jeep.

Guy had some on ebay last week. Wanted about $10-12 each for them after shipping though.
 
I don't think I've ever heard of an elevator bolt.

Fastenal have 'em maybe?
 
I made a bunch of these over the summer for the '82.
I cut sheet metal tabs to fit the trim channel and then just welded 1/4" bolts to them. Works perfect.
Didn't you just get a shiny new welder?:p
 
I do have a welder now - welding ain't the problem.

I'm wondering if the portion on the factory brackets that is the cylindrical part the threaded stud comes out of is imortant or not. Does the aluminum rocker trim strip need to sit flush against the painted body? If so, wouldn't it rub? Does it need to be set off of the body just a little bit? If so, wouldn't the cylindrical portion serve as a spacer of sorts?

I've got some options here in town with multiple machinists who do work for Redstone Arsenal and I'm wondering if I had a whole bunch of these things made - would there be enough demand for them out there to justify making them in the first place. I can make some that would work fine given the ideas you guys have given me - I'm just wondering if there would be enough folks that would want some they could just buy and bolt in without having to fabricate them. It's a cost thing too. I don't think they should cost $5 each. $12 is absurd.

What else would these be used on? CJ-8's obviously but 7's, 5's - anything else?
 
just stick some washers on the elevator bolt to take the place of the spacer part.....
 
Jake, you are making this way too hard. Let me see if I have any extra ones laying around to take a pic of.
 
Found one. I used 16ga. sheet metal, 1.125" x .625". Welded a 1/4' bolt to it. Done.
You don't need the spacer.

That looks easier than trying to make the broken ones work (I think?)

fastenall has the elevator bolts, i saw them today,you could use washers to make the spacers or cut some from from small diameter tubing,

i am going to grind the old ones down and drill and tap them ,spin in a bolt with lock-tight and cut off the head off, it does take some work ,but it is right when your done

by the way ,i was at fastenall buying grade 8 bolts to re-atach new chains to my car trailer
i was on my way back from maryland after looking at the scrambler for $4500 posted a few days ago
and my trailer came free and broke the chain welds
no one got hurt and the trailer came to rest in a ditch with only wiring damage
i hope this never happens to any of you, not one of my best moments
 
if you make your own as shown in earlier post, as well as use some old ones, remember you need to use an all thread one for the front as the fender bows out slightly. I found out the hard way using a mix of originals and a few spares from my old cj7.
 
I just take the old ones, grind down where it broke off and cut the head off a 1/4 inch bolt and butt weld them together. Takes about 3 minutes.

I've just decided to make some simple ones welding a bolt to some steel strips.
-Just not enough demand to go into production.
If you want some of these I've made, just let me know and I could probably do some more for you.
