Carburetor Survey

I need to replace the Carter 2BBL carburetor on my 81 CJ8 258 6cylinder. I tried rebuilding it, but still leaks gas out the side where linkage rod is. Not cool when it drips on exhaust manifold. I'm curious to know who likes what carb setup for this engine and could you suggest who best vendor is to supply it? I'm looking for a daily driver version, reliable but not a guzzler. What's been the most successful setup out there?

weber

Hey,
I have a Weber 32/36 Carb on my 258 and I love it. It took a while to tune but, once its set up right It runs Very smooth.
Thats the only Carb. ive had experience with on this motor but, It is a good choice. And I know that alot more people use the Weber als.

I have a Motorcraft 2100, they are common- bought mine for $50
Much bigger & better then the Carter it replaced.

Relace the BBD

DawDude,
Take the BBD and modify it to fit in the nearest trash can! It
wont even make a good boat anchor. The 32/36 Weber is a good
unit if your engine is entirely stock,or no more modified than a
freer exhaust and ignition upgrade. If you have any internal mods
go with the 38 Weber or do like I did and go with a 4 bbl and a
good intake.With a Pacesetter + Flowmaster exh.,bigger than
stock cam,MSD ign so on and so on I get 17 mpg.Go it your way
but by all means dont mess up your trash can when depositing
the BBD in it.Good Luck,Good Jeepin' and God Bless.

holley 390

i like the holley 390 4bbl...it flows enough air that you can jet it to pretty much match your engine...mine is running just a little lean, so i am going to jet it a little richer soon...

I have the motercraft 2100 on mine. I think it works good... Better than the edlebrock 4 barrell on my other jeep.

I have to weber 32/36 and really like it. I have never had a stall at any angle. I'm not sure how it affected performance or mileage because I put it on when I rebuilt my engine.
