Is it time to dump the SR-4?

I've been thinking about upgrading my SR-4 to some kind of automatic, but I figured that I would let it die of natural causes first. Anyway, after not having driven my jeep for some period of time (while upgrading my steering system) I found that I could not get my tranny into reverse or first. It just wouldn't budge into first (no noise), and the gears complained big-time (GRIND) when I tried reverse. It had worked fine before and I had not touched the tranny or anything close to it. I finally jammed the thing into reverse, getting through the grinding, and it's been fine ever since.

Do I chalk this up to "American" cars, is the tranny going out, or is the clutch plate just getting a bit thin? Please excuse my ignorance but I'm not much of a mechanic (yet ;)).

If it's working, don't worry about it. But when it does go out just throw it out. It's not worth fixing.
