Hello all. I have got a '81 w/258, SR4 & Dana 300. Problem is the SR4. Has anyone done a NP435 swap that can offer some advice? Or maybe a WC T4/5? Any and all info would be helpful. I am interested in what real world work it takes. I plan on doing the work myself!! Gotta save $$$$$.
Thanks in advance.

a t-176 bellhousing will adapt for an np435, a great transmission, but then there would also be the adapting to a dana 300, advanced adapters will probably have a reasonably priced adapter, but www.wagonermachine.com may be able to beat their price, the np435 is also a deeper transmissions, so you will also have to customize your transfer case skid plate to do this, i have also heard that using a transfer case lowering kit can work to. But if your using your 8 for around town use or you dont need a granny gear tranny, then you might be best $ wise to go with a t-176 since they're supposed to handle the power of a v-8. But behind the 258 a t-5 will stand up to most conditions (and mine has stood up for 50k miles of rockcrawling with 32's and a crawl ratio of 40, with out any problems what so ever, knock on wood) If your going with a wc-t5, id spend the little extra time and money and go find an nv4500 and adapt it, on an earlier post i was told that you can adapt the diesel versions to fit into jeeps, but i havent personally pursued that any further.

Mario,
Welcome to the long boy board. I live here in L.A. too. You may want to stop by and check out my transmission supply. SM420, SM465, T98, Clark 280VO.
I'm using the NP435 and like it a lot. I used the stock T4 B.H. that came with my '82 CJ8 and drilled one more hole at the boss provided. The SR4 B.H. is slightly different, [I believe]. The big expense is the adapter for the D300. It's variously $400-500. Novak and Advance Adapters sell what you need. The NP435 is the widest of the wide ratios you can bolt on a CJ8. This is with either a Jeep or Ford B.H. pattern. If you had a Scout D300 I could sell you a Jeep T98 with adapter to D20 (or Scout D300) I have laying around for cheap. It has a 6.40, low gear.
What pig gears do you have?, or do you know? Probably 2.73:1. If you have these and are going to keep them, you won't need a 5 speed. You need to make some decisions regarding where you're going with your buildup. I've been doing this a long time and can help you decide what to do.

Jefe,
I currently have a T4. Are you saying that if I use the bellhousing from it I can bolt on an NP435 without any other adapters?
Jason

Thanks

Just wanted to say Thank you to the advice! I'm glad I've found you guys. Anybody else please feel free to offer any ideas or advice.

Best wishes to all,

Mario

No matter what bellhousing you use you will need an adapter for the trans to transcase. I am also doing this swap and have found a price of $409 for the AA adapter from Central 4WD. Does anyone kow if anyone can beat this?

Jason84,
You can bolt an NP435 to a T4 B.H. with the drilling of one more hole in the B.H. at a convienient boss. You will, as was noted, need an adapter from trans to B.H. This is THE most expensive part of the whole deal. Mine was from AA and it was a bit less than $500, which included a new mainshaft for the trans and a new tail housing adapter (about 4" long) to go between them and other assorted hardware like bearings and seals. This did not include complete dissasembly of the trans to install the new mainshaft.
A Ford T18, Ford T19(all sychro), Ford T98, or Ford NP435 will all bolt to the Jeep T4 bell housing. Which ever trans you can pick up for cheap.
