transmission i.d.

I'm sure it's an SR4, but I have a transmission with a Chev V-8 mounted to it without an adapter, it's ribbed along the length of the case. Where do I find the i.d. numbers on the drivers side? I've looked but don't see anything.

Thanks.

Tranny I.D.

This is a copy from the "stupid transmission question" post:

I had running hell trying to ID my transmission. Finally, I went to 4WD Hardware magazine. Here's what they say about the SR4 & T4:

SR4 - Aluminum case, 4 speed transmission; uses ball bearings on maindrive gear and mainshaft; the top cover has a Ford casting mark; used from 1980-81 4,6 cyl. CJ.

Casting Number on Transmission Case:
13-32-065-9XX or 13-40-065-9XX

Case Length:
9.25"

T4 - Aluminum case, 4 speed transmision; uses tapered bearings on maindrive gear and mainshaft; used from 1982-86 4,6 cyl. model CJ5, CJ-7, CJ8.

Casting Number on Transmission Case:
13-51-065-9XX or 13-52-065-9XX

Case Length:
9 3/16"

Hope this helps. Good Luck - Dwain

Tranny I.D.

I'm sorry, I guess I don't understand your question. I think that you are trying to I.D. your tranny. Are you sure that the I.D. numbers are on the driver's side? The trannies that I've seen had numbers on the top of the case. You could access these by pulling the shifter cover. I am by no means an expert on these, and would be curious for what you find when you do I.D. it. Hope this helps - Dwain

the tech info says the id numbers are on the drivers side, so my question was merely- "where" on the drivers side.

Dwain says to look at the top, so that's where I'll go next.

Another possibility is that you have a Chevy T-5, but don't quote me on that. I've never seen an SR-4, but I can't imagine someone wanting to use one behind any V8. The ribs and the existance of a separate Chevy T-5 are what make me think that's what it is. Those casting numbers that were posted also apply to T-5's (I had one with a 13-51 casting that I sold to another CJ-8.com'er).

Is the engine/tranny currently in a Jeep, or do you just have this combo out on the ground?

It's still in the Jeep. I have yet to pull up the boot and see if it says "Ford" on it like previously suggested.

It's been behind the Chevy for more than 60,000 trouble-free miles and still shifts good. I'm just curious as to what tranny it is. I cannot locate any numbers on the sides.

Pulled up the boot, didn't see any words or id numbers. But, it has a 3-bolt shifter cover. As you look at the cover from the drivers seat, the drivers side is straight, the top is straight, and the other two sides make a curve.

Anyone here know?

and it is a 4-speed. too many gears for a 3-speed, not enough for a 5-speed.

My SR-4, that I'm using as a paperweight in the garage, has the casting numbers on the case cover. They are right next to the little Ford logo. It was too dark to read the numbers. You have to remove your tunnel cover to see these numbers, not just the shifter boot. Hope that helps. hobbs
