My De-Rustification Project

Well, I got the diff cover off. I took my trusty Dremel out and cut off two sides of each bolt head and then used vise grips to twist each of the 6 remaining bolts off. Hex head bolts will replace these f#%^* torx bolts.

Now to figure out how to get the driver side drum off of the axle.

By the way, diff fluid stinks. ;)

Ok. I guess all of the PB blaster usage over the past few days helped. Banging the crap out of the drum helped too.

Next up is to take some parts off of the old frame (brake line extension, maybe some rubber lines, and the old shock towers to see what bolts I need). I also want to see how the fuel lines run. But I doubt that I will get to installing the new ones today. I may take the Riddler diff cover off of the old axle today as well.

And I finally took the old tie rod and stabilizer off of the front axle. I had to pull out the dremel again to cut off the castle nut off of one side.

And got the calipers off of the front axle.

Started to try to get the tie rod off of the old axle, but got tired of fighting with it. Called it a day and opened a Sam Adam's Octoberfest.

Where'd you get the brake lines? My local NAPA has lines cheap, but they don't have the stone guards on them.

I got them from Classic Tube. Happy with the way they are working so far. I only had to make minor adjustments to the bends.

Ok. A couple steps forward and a step back (of course)

So today the plan was to swap over the front brake parts and the tie rod. So I got the tie rod off of the old frame with no problem. But I guess I messed up the top threads of the tie rod ends because I cannot get the castle nuts back on. Grrrrr

I got the front brake parks off of the old axle and got them onto the new axle without any issues. I decided to put the borrowed wheels onto the ild frame and have the chrome rims ready to go onto the rolling chassis.

And right as I was cleaning up, the post man came and dropped off my front shock towers (Thanks Pete!!!). So now I can start prepping them and get them ready to install. So in all a productive morning. But I think I need to get some tie rod ends, which does not please me.

How do the white wheels look on the Scrambler?

A little more patience and a little more filing. The tie rod is on.

Oh. I also cleaned up the shock towers. Gonna paint and then install those bad boys. And yes, I drilled holes at the bottom of the "bucket" to keep them from collecting water. Thanks for the idea Jim and Curtis.

This pic is to compare before and after the wire wheel.

I'm glad you can use them. Looks like they cleaned up ok thankfully.

Was flippin' through stuff with my coffee and caught your thread. Glad to see it coming along. Like how you don't edit out the pain in the ars things. I also share tour enthusiasm for torx head fasteners. Good luck with it all, don't let up your doing great.

The shock tower bolts look surprisingly decent shape.
The ones that come out up here are normally eaten away in the center where they pass through the frame and are brittle and fragile... and normally end up breaking when you apply force to take them out.

Amazing what a difference a few hundred miles south will make for metal bits.

I was planning on getting some new ones for that very reason. And yes, I was surprised Pete was able to get them out. I was only able to get one nut off of the ones on my old frame. I am sure that the bolts won't be coming out of that one.

Thanks. I am glad it is coming along as well. And yes, I complain a bit too. But it is all going to be worth it.

I assume that you saw the pics of my sliced nose at one point. If not, take another look. That was fun.
