    My '81 journey. . . so far.

Well, I’m stumped. I tried 180 out and it does the same thing. Cranks and cranks but won’t catch. I spent the time double and triple checked TDC on compression and I’m good there. It seems that it was 180 out. My dumba$$ forgot that in a 4 stroke engine there are 2 TDC’s. However, there is no...

    My '81 journey. . . so far.

This might be a dumb question, but is it possible to have the timing mark on the crank pully be incorrect or out of spec? I ask, as I thought they were keyed and could only be installed in one way. With the HEI, there is no defined placement of the wires, as the distributor will spin to adjust...

    My '81 journey. . . so far.

That is quite thorough. I will be working through some of this on Sunday. Some of it I know is good, firing order, plug wire location, stuff like that. However, I have a feeling after reading this, I am probably not timed correctly and I have to adjust the distributor to get it lined up better...

    My '81 journey. . . so far.

And the frustration just keeps building. I got the wiring harness all done, got the DUI HEI distributor in, and she still will not fire up. I can crank till the battery goes dead, but no fire. I have spark, I have air, and I have fuel, I can smell the gas as I try to fire it up. I do also need...

    What's on your Work Bench?

The last thing on the bench before I finish installing the HEI distributor and timing the 8 is my '12 Victory Highball. I had to rebuild the forks and just need to finish torquing the bolts and the axle down and she will be back on the road. I miss riding that bike and can't wait to get her out...

    My '81 journey. . . so far.

Finally got 98% of the wiring taken care of. Found a few bad parts and sensors after that. So I have a new "To Do" list. Currently waiting for the new plug wires to arrive so I can get the HEI distributor installed and get her timed. After that, I can put together the list in an organized...

    My '81 journey. . . so far.

It does, actually. It is kind of cool to see a previous iteration of the Jeep and seeing where it was when I got it home, and then yet today when I have done a few things already. Thank you for that information.

    My '81 journey. . . so far.

I just looked at the FaceBook posts and what not from the OP in the post you linked. I have to really question what he actually did now. The dash is different than what was in it when I got it, no floor mats at all, the decals are gone off the hood. A bit of head scratching going on over here...

    My '81 journey. . . so far.

The dash that was in it was a hacked up stainless steel POS. I put the dash from the pile of parts from my 84 8. Looks odd, but I’m too old to actually care. 😂

    My '81 journey. . . so far.

As a matter of fact I did buy it from them. I know it sounds like a lot of complaints, but yes the body and frame are all in great shape. The fixes, other than the electrical issues, aren’t really that hard to deal with. It’s just the time and effort. No, they never fixed a bloody thing lol...

    My '81 journey. . . so far.

It was bought, mostly sight unseen. I saw quite a few pictures on the site where it was being sold, but I didn't get a chance to look first hand as it was in Rhode Island and I'm in Nevada lol. It was, in my opinion, a good deal. I have been steadily working on it, trying to fix the mistakes of...

    My '81 journey. . . so far.

This has been a roller coaster of an experience so far. But, just to get things out to maybe clear my head and also to let my fellow 8 owners know how the trip is going. July '25) 81 Scrambler is delivered to the house. I notice right away that there are a few minor issues. Nothing big, but...

    Part identification help

Thank you, I tried a hand full of image searches and whatnot, even tried an AI search. Most of them came up with that it is a voltage regulator. Since that is inside the alternator, I knew that was out. I can say for sure that I don't need this then. No A/C on the 8, and there is no solenoid...

    Part identification help

I found this box plugged into the factory wiring harness and am in the process of installing a Painless kit. There is no provision for this in the harness and I can’t seem to positively ID it on the wiring diagrams. The Jeep is an 81 with the stock 258 6 cyl. I am assuming since it’s not taken...

Gauges stay powered when ignition in “off” position. Help!!

Well, I have not finished the install as I am kind of taking my time to make sure I don't muck it up. However, I can say that they had assembled my harness kit correctly. I have gotten most of the "easy" stuff done, now I'm getting into the under hood connections that need terminated by me, and...

Gauges stay powered when ignition in “off” position. Help!!

I may have to check my painless kit I just got, unless they fixed this mistake. I already have the old harness out and have been installing the new harness. This is a little overwhelming, I can do house wiring, but automotive wiring has always given me trouble. However, as I am into the install...

    Never Changes

Don't feel bad man, I am in the same boat with my 81. I keep finding the crap that the previous "restorer" did that make 0 sense. Bypassed heater core, wrong transmission and transfer case, gauges and switches on the dash that don't work at all, removed heat ducting, removed the washer bottle...

Who are you using to insure your CJs?

I was able to get a classic policy for the '81 through State Farm. However, I think the wife and I are going to shop around, they seem to be the most expensive in Nevada. They just asked if it would be garage kept, and I said "yes" but that was before I figured out that it wouldn't even fit in...

    Speedometer bulb sockets

These dorman sockets worked perfectly! Sadly, the battery in the jeep is shot so I have to replace that before I can drive it again. It’s always something. But, the fuel gauge is working for sure now!

    Speedometer bulb sockets

Not to bring this thread back from the dead, but I am assuming that these will snap into the back of the speedometer nicely? I finally got mine put back together, after realizing I made a mistake doing it the first time, and when I put the gauge back in the dash, one of the bulbs stays in, the...
