I would encourage you come up with a plan for your new Jeep then execute in order of priority. It seems like you are all over the place with paint, leaks, bed panels, liners, radios, consoles, etc.... Maybe focus all your attention on the mechanical stuff get it squared away, then rust/body...
I would put a very thin layer in the housing with my finger or a very thin layer on the outside diameter of the seal. The key is very very thin layer. If you just put the silicone on the outside it would be pushed out by the oil.
Since you have a metal housing and a metal seal and you are concerned about scratches allowing leaks. You can apply a very thin layer of RTV silicone then use the PVC pipe to tap the new seal in place. The silicone will dry and fill in any scratches.
Hastings215,
I would polish and wax. Here is a link to what I used on mine.

Not sure about the YJ thing. The doors would function but the had a little "catch" when you opened them. I used a die grinder to make a small notch. This allowed additional articulation of the handle.
I bought the door handles and the felt window trim from J & G Classic Jeeps. George sells direct but you can look him up on eBay his username is cjlaredo.
Nice! Great line of work. I bet it is totally different in the Pacific Northwest vs the Carolina's. I was a first responder for a couple years and did substation/line switching. Now I am in the transmission control center.
No, I have wide track axles with 15X7. But if you look at a 15X8 the depth or dish is noticeably deeper. I would conclude that this gives a wider stance. Several folks are running these rims maybe someone can chime in with additional details.
