12 bolt rear axle

I finally got around to crawling under the back of my new to me scrambler and I have a 12 bolt Chevrolet axle. I haven’t looked under the front to see if I have a 30 or if it was swapped also. I had planned on getting it airborne at some point to figure out what I have in the way of gearing but haven’t had much extra time and energy. So, is a 12 bolt a decent axle if built correctly to keep for a while? There aren’t any rocks in my area to go bash on and don’t have plans to really do much muddin. I have a mildly built 350 and auto trans. Unsure what transfer case I have yet. I am curious what goes into modifying this axle to work in a scrambler if anyone has any insight. I know I want to convert the drums to discs and I haven’t taken the cover off the wheel yet to see if it is a five lug or more pattern.

The 12 bolt isn’t a bad axle, just not the most common swap. It’s the next size up from a 10 bolt/dana 44 clone. I would assume you have the matching front from the donor vehicle as the truck 12 bolt is significantly wider than the Dana 30/amc 20 your jeep came with.

I live up in Edmond, there are rocks in OK if you travel a bit.

Thanks for the reply! I do have a 10 bolt up front but haven’t looked for any stamping or anything to see if I could get an idea of their age. I’m by Tinker and I doubt I will get further than about one county away from home unless I get a wide trailer to haul mine on for now.
