3-person back seat in a Scrambler

I am starting this build thread here for how i am going to install a 3-person back seat in my CJ-8.

The seat i have chosen is a 2003 Yukon 3rd Row seat in gray leather with integrated shoulder seat belts for the two outside seats. The center seat is lap belt only, which will work fine with the car-seat. Attached is an image i took from Ebay of a similar seat. I found this seat locally on OfferUp for $50.

The latching system bolts to the bottom of the seat. It has a bunch of safety features that require the 5 mounting latches to be secure before the seat will open. This system is cables that run from the mounting latches to the lever to open the seat. Once i understood this system, and was sure i wasn't going to screw anything up, i disconnected all but one cable which i will attach a handle to for opening the seat. I'll take some pics this weekend and post them here.

The Yukon seat is 48" wide...12" wider than the CJ seat. I am going to notch the fenders 6" on either side to get it to fit. When fully flexed, my tires should still have about 1" of clearance before hitting the pieces i am going to weld into the fenders.

I'll take more photos over the weekend and post them up on Monday.

so far, so good. Now i just need to figure out the mounting brackets. I have some ideas, but need a fresh mind to come up with the best/easiest way.

thanks!

What is your rear axle/tire/wheel setup? 6" seems like quite the french to still not hinder tire stuffing... But looks like a very legit and viable option for people wanting a tidy seating solution! Good work!

35-12.50-15 tires on 8" wide wheels.

custom width ford 9"...will have to measure width...its been over 20 years since i spec'd and built the axles.

Suspension is SOA with YJ leaves and i have about 3-4" of uptravel from the spring plate to the bumpstop and over 6" of clearance from the tire to the new pieces in the fenderwells.

It took a lot of head scratching and i almost didn't buy the seat because i wasn't sure it would work. but my only other option (according to the wife and boys) was to buy a 4-door JK...so far, i'm into this for $50 and might have another $50 in my mounting brackets to have them cut on a CNC plasma table. I think i made the best choice...at least the one that cost the least amout of $$

I'll check out some stock CJ-8's at the Sandblast in a couple weeks to see what kind of clearance they have. I also have a YJ and TJ i can check to see if this would work. I will also know after running around on the dunes at Silver Lake MI if i have any clearance issues.

The M10-1.5 x 35mm long flat head bolts were available at Menards. Be aware that Metric flat head bolts are a 90 degree head and NOT 82 degree like SAE bolts. I made a 90 degree countersink out of an old cheap 1" Silver Deming drill bit. It only took about 5 minutes with a grinder and combination square to make this countersink, and saved me the $60 of buying the correct bit.

The brackets have been painted black and the final installation of the seat will happen tonight. I had to put a 1/4" thick washer and a 1/2" flat washer under the rear bracket to get it in plane with the front bracket. If i were to do it again, i would make these out of a multiple pieces and weld them at the correct height and angle...but in the interest of time...this will work just fine!

Its done! When i get back from Sandblast, i am going to remove the seat and paint the rear fender wells. I have a little more grinding to do on the welds and want to spray the same epoxy primer that is on the rest of the tub.

feel free to post any questions!
Matt

Did the seat tumble originally in the Yukon? Was there any way to incorporate that, or was that outside of your scope? I like the concept, especially the built in seat belts, but tumble would be nice for versatility. Also, how does the leg room look for your boys in that location?

Edit: I see the pictures of the boys sitting, but was more curious what it looked like from behind the back seat with the front seats fully back.

originally the Yukon seat had 5 latches and a "kick-stand". you had to fold the seat back down and then it would flip forward on the front latches and you would put the kick-stand down to hold it "flipped". in my 7/13 photos, you can see where i broke the kick-stand brackets off the bottom of the seat frame with an adjustable wrench. this allowed me to put the seat flat on the fenders.

I can fold the seat back down, but not flip it forward. My original CJ seat was non folding. in the interest of time, i make fixed brackets. I decided i would just remove the 4 bolts if i needed the bed space...but with a truck and multiple trailers...it would be better and faster to leave the seat in place and either pull a trailer or use the truck.

I toyed with the idea of getting the Yukon mounts that screw to the floor, but it would have taken more work to get that to fit and the seat base may have been too high putting the passengers head close to the roll bar.

there is plenty of leg room...way more than a CJ-7, YJ, or TJ...i'll get a pic with the front seats back.
