I couldn't figure out why the PO did not install self-adjusters on the rear drums (found during a brake inspection I did a couple of months ago). I addressed this tonight, and I realized why. The left rear took about 1:20 with much cursing and investigation/reading. The right rear took about :20 after changing the order of operation (live and learn). I'm posting photos below as a reference to others (and for peer review).

Auto-adjuster part numbers for AMC 20 with standard drum (10"). Sadly, made in China, with the expected quality and consistency:

  • 16739.04 (OE: H2515) Right Rear Self-Adjusting HW Kit (Omix/RR/Alloy)
  • 16739.03 (OE: H2514) Left Rear Self-Adjusting HW Kit (Omix/RR/Allow)

On the top springs attached to the shoe anchor pin. Take a pair of pliers and squeeze the spring ends more. Not to the point of closed but enough the they don't continue straightening out. Don't want them to come off.

Self adjusting drums are a PITA to assemble and generally don't work all that well. The spring ends should run more parallel to each other
