Auto tranny shift troubles

So I am having a hard time shifting using the column shift. My Scrambler was a factory auto.

I have a TF727 and DO have all the factory linkage parts to connect the tranny to the column however went with a cable system.

With the bushings looking not so great along with wanting to use the space for exhaust (running true dual exhaust off the 304) I bought and hooked up an iDidit cable system. For the life of me, and my engine guy, we cannot get it to shift very well at all using the column. Seems no matter what adjustments are done, you have to really yank on it to get it out of park and it doesn't seem to like to line up with the indicators on the column making it hard to know exactly what position you are in.

So my question is this, am I going about this all wrong? Could the issue be in the tranny itself? FWIW - once in Drive it shifts smoothly going down the road. I really don't want to put in a floor shifter just due to looks / personal preference but would do so as a last resort.

Did you check if the stiffness of taking it out of park is in the transmission itself? You can do this by disconnecting the shift linkage and manually moving the lever on the transmission. My tf999 is a little stiff coming out of park too, but it is in the tranny, not the linkage. I am not going to worry about it until my trans needs a rebuild or it gets worse. Also, is your steering column for a tf tranny or the earlier turbo 400? The shift indicators and detents are different on each.

The column is the original one used with the 909. I didn't realize the indicators are different so that helps out a lot. I guess I don't know how it should feel manually shifting it on the transmission itself. I will try that and see.
 
It should not stick coming out of park and should feel close to the same as moving it through the rest of the gears.
 
follow the linkage at the firewall, there is a bolt or nut that its catching on. Happened to me on my CJ7.
