Break In A Engine

I BOUGHT MY SCRAMBLER 84' ABOUT 5 MONTH'S AGO. I AM FINALLY GETTING AROUND TO HAVING THE ENGINE DROPPED IN. SO MY QUESTION IS WHAT IS THE BEST WAY OF BREAKING IN MY REBUILT ENGINE.

most people just drive around for about 500 miles, nothing exciting, keeping the rpms in a normal range

What i have done and been told is to drive it like you normally would. Change the oil more frequently and not to let it sit and idle for long periods of time.

For the first 500 miles do not perform any full throttle acceleration. Limit it to 3/4 at the most. Do not allow any extended idling either. Do not run at any single engine speed for a long time, vary speeds every few minutes on long freeway trips. Keep close watch on engine temp and oil pressure. The temp may be a little higher than normal until everything settles in. After 500 miles, changing the oil is optional, but I recommend it. Drive normally, but still take it a little easy for the next 500. Don't tow, at least anything heavy, until after 1000 miles. At 3000 change the oil, and every 3000 thereafter. If you're planning on using synthetic oil, wait until after 6000 miles. If you're planning on using any of the "miracle additives", wait until after 12,000 miles (although they really aren't necessary if you change the oil every 3000). I've been following this advice for years now and have never had a problem.

gas

also, keep track of you gas mileage! when you notice that the gas mileage increases then your rings have set good, give it about another 100 miles (just to make sure) and you should be good to go!
