Cummins R2.8 Aftercooler

Has anyone done the Cummins R2.8 conversion, and if so, what aftercooler did you end up using? Any pics would be appreciated!

I have a friend that has a pretty wild turbo TJ. He used air to water for the packaging issues. Everything was obviously custom made. His is working pretty good. Believe the current tune is 320 to the tire. Next version will be a built stroker with near double the power. Obviously air to water requires more work to get going.

Christian Hazel with the UA CJ6/R2.8 used an air to air intercooler. It was too wide and he had to make a custom headlight/bucket for the passenger side.

Fred Williams has the R2.8 in Tube sock.

Trent Mcgee has the UA Scout 800 with the R2.8.

All of the Motortrend r2.8 conversions have decent information online to see how they did their packaging.
 
I looked for a good long while and couldn't find one that fit perfect between the grill and the radiator. IMO to make it fit right and not look like crap you would need to modify an off the shelf unit to fit well.
There is a guy on Insta or the r2.8 forum that has a pretty good setup... unfortunately I have since dropped the idea of the 2.8 and gotten rid of instagram so I don't even know how to find the guy anymore.
 
I found an aftercooler that will work and fit in the grill area. Axis Industries makes one but they were 6 months out so I found one with the same dimensions made by Mishimoto. Anyway, my r2.8 just showed up after 8 months. That's this winter's project.
 
I'm debating the same conversion. They are telling me March for delivery.

Personally, I will never run a turbo diesel without an intercooler ever again. I had a "1st Gen" non-intercooled 12 valve Cummins in my "Fummins" originally, but on a heavy pull up a long grade melted the crown off the number 1 piston due to uncontrollable EGT's. That was just an empty happy throttle run, not pulling a trailer. Granted, I had the screw turned all the way and was cramming 35 psi of boost in, but still. A headwind and a long grade while loaded with gear will bring the heat, and it would be a shame to compromise anything. Not to mention in an electric diesel that likely has an active IAT sensor it will go into limp mode if things get too hot and that would be equally frustrating albeit less catastrophic. With Jeeps having a tendency of running hot under the hood that makes things worse as you're heating up already hot air (assuming most traditional open element intake setups). If space is an issue, doing an air-to-water intercooler is really not that complicated and packages quite nicely. Yes, it's potentially a separate water circuit to manage, but it's tried and true technology and the parts are out there. If you're going to spend big bucks on the R2.8, best to keep it happy. Just my $0.02...
 
All good points.. both my wife's Tahoe and my silverado are obviously water intercooler. But every Toyota diesel I've ever had hasn't been intercooled so I was thinking about saving the space as I'm not that fused about the power gain to be had.
I just bought the Jeep Air under dash heat/ air con to install with the engine as I'm getting it with the compressor, so I was thinking I'd save the space up front.
I guess as long as I'm doing it though, it's worth doing as best as it can be done.
