Dash Repair

Looking good! Those Sony speakers are nice! You can also use the factory speakers from a Jeep TJ Wrangler sound bar. They can be found pretty cheap and it is from another Jeep if that makes any difference! :D

Here are a few pictures before I take the dash panel loose to fix the speaker rattle and tach light. I still have to mount the A/C unit, ashtray above the radio and steering column surround. I hope to be done soon, plus my wife would like her parking spot back soon.

I almost forgot, I have been looking for the A/C hose grommet for the fire wall. (the big oval hole covered with a plate on the passenger side firewall) Friday I went salvaging at the pull a part and noticed a Wagonner had the same oval hole on the firewall as a CJ. I bought the steel reinforced grommet for a couple bucks. It fits perfect, the two screw holes line up and it has the two holes for the hoses to pass through.

Finally done with the dash and everything works now! I still have to install the cowl seal and windshield, that was what started this project.

There is just somethng about a T-176 handle sticking up straight and proud against a nice original dash like that. It is the best driving and looking combo ever on the 80s CJs, IMHO. Great work! :woot: If you are ever considering selling this beauty, please put me at the top of the list !

Yeah wives are funny like that! The basic rule in my garage is her car has to fit. I can bend it for a big project but not for long. I also learned it is not good to do a big project in winter or bad weather! Of course unless there is aomething with major breakage I need to fix!
Looks very nice! great job.

Where did you get the A/C unit, it looks new? Did you upgrade the heater motor while you had everything apart?

Thanks for the compliments. This project has given me a new level of respect to you guys who redo entire rigs. My 100 degree two car garage is back to normal and I've been enjoying the back roads while I still have the windshield down.:)

I have always heard the T-176 is tough to beat. Both of the CJ's I've owned happened to have one it them.

This Jeep was heavily oxidized, from the Calif desert. I have spent quite a few hours trying to bring it back, but some of the hood, windshield frame patina are there to stay. I still haven't buffed out the bed yet. Any how, it's probably not as nice as you think, but it's certainly to nice for me to sell.;)

I bought it off a local forum for $35 and he lived 15 minutes away! I did buy new vents and knobs for it. I am going to take it to an A/C shop to finish the under-hood hook up.

I didn't replace the heater motor, I probably should have. I guess since we've been in a heat wave, I just wasn't thinking heater motor.

Bobbys-, You did a great job on your dash resto job; it's really in keeping with the rest of your very nice looking Jeep. I have my eye on an eBay item to put in my '81 SL Scrambler. It is sold by 'boiseradio', and is a 'Stereo Radio for Jeep 1976-86, no cutting, New am/fm' for $ 169.95 + 9.50 expedited shpg. They have sold 13 of these radios, and I am about to purchase one. I like the idea that it will fit in my Scrambler's original, unmodified dash radio opening, and is a new unit with a 7 day guanantee. I have no connection with this outfit, but do plan to buy one of their radios and install it in my CJ-8 soon, while they're available.

There was a post recently about those radios. I would also consider going to salvage yards and looking for 70's & 80's Wagoneers with stock radios. They managed to stay dry and usually work. If you luck up and find one it will be much cheaper too. Let us know what you decide and post some pictures!

That's just great
I love this Scrambler. Color, condition, the whole package!!!
:drool::cheers:

Thanks Tommy... I appreciate the complements, it's a work in progress like all of them.

I can't wait to see all those parts you've been collecting combined with your Red SL turn into a rare loaded Scrambler. It's going to be NICE! Don't get discouraged....
