DIY bedliner questions Pro-tex, etc

Hello, all. Has anyone used the 2-part urethane liner offered by by SEM? It is called Pro-Tex, but I have found similar "new" products from other manufacturers. I saw Pro-Tex in an Eastwood catalog. I found it on a few other websites for a fair amount less for the kit but not sure if it is worth the DIY effort. I am getting ready to repaint "Bessie" myself and the bed is a bit rusted. I'd like to put a spray-in bedliner in but the last truck I had done professionally was a bit pricey. I'd like to do the bed from the top of the bulkhead to the top of the tailgate (and maybe over the top edge). Any input on the more recent DIY bedliner kits on the market would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

A guy I know uses that sem product. Its the nicest I have seen . He also does the roll bar with it.

DIY bedliner questions Pro-Tex, etc

Thanks for the replies. I will look into both of them, and the other 2-part kits. I am in the process of repainting 'Bessie' and I would like to get the bed and maybe cab area better protection.

Sincerely,

I have used theRAPTOR product on my 8 and 7. I give it a  Was able to purchase it at the local carquest auto parts store.

how thick is it?

How thick is it ?
I have had Line-X before, and i Know Rhino lining can get fairly thick,
but,
How thick does this turn out to be?

Thanks

Bulkhead?

When you guys use the bed liner on the interior what do you do around the bulkhead? I am concerned that if I use the bed liner on the floor where the bulkhead bolts to the floor it will mess up the alignment thus messing up the top installation. Am I worried about nothing? Should I put the bed liner all the way from the tailgate to the firewall? Also, do you guys do the sides of the interior of the cab? I know everyone does the interior walls of the bed, just not sure about the cab. Last question, I have heard of bed liner being color matched. Has anyone done this? I am thinking if I can, doing the interior of the cab in white so it's less obvious. Thanks for the help.

Hey, Tom. On a few other threads and photos on this forum it looks like some folks install the bulkhead then apply the bedliner, basically sealing it in. Others have said they shot the bulkhead seperately and installed it after the whole tub was shot. There was one thread here in particular that stated that the buildup from the bed liner was close enough to the original bulkhead gasket that it fit great. I am not sure how I will do it, I was thinking about masking off the area where the bulkhead mounts during the first one or two liner coats, then remove it for the last spray(s). For me it will depend on how thick the liner I chose will go on per pass. I am going to try the Pro-Tex liner by SEM. It seems to have good reviews on the web, I'll cross my fingers and hope it is good. I plan to shoot it from the tailgate to the firewall...there is a really nice thread here with some folks that have done this. One of them used a tinted liner (color matching?) and it looked really nice in the photos. If you search for it here I believe he did it in red to match the body. I am plannnning to use a tinted liner, too, and contacted the manufacturer about it. Of course, they said it will match if I mix the pigment properly. I did ask about spraying paint over top of the liner if I didn't get a perfect match. They said this was possible if I waited until the liner was fully cured, sand it with course paper and spray my paint over it. They did go on to say that top coating with paint will make scuffs more noticable since you will be rubbing directly on paint when you throw things in the bed. Anyway, hope this helps. I will hopefully be doing mine over the next month or so and I will be glad to post my results.

Sincerely,

Roll Bar

OK, next question, have you guys taken out the roll bar and put the bed liner under or did you just work around it? I know a lot of you have decided to spray part of all of the roll bar but I don't want to do that. Has anyone pulled it and sprayed under then reattach?

Tom

Hey again, Tom. I don't want my roll bar coated either. I have already pulled it out as part of my tear-down. Just plug the tapped holes with rolled-up tape or whittled wooden plugs prior to putting down the liner or putting the bolts back in will be a major problem. I would suggest to anyone, even those that want to coat the roll bar, to remove it and see what is underneath. My bed was rusted, in some cases pitted, but was entacted overall. When I pulled the roll bar out, however, I found two nasty rot places under both front mounts. For some reason the factory put what looks like drain holes in the center of the two front mounts (directly centered between the 4 mount holes). I am going to have to remove the 2" diameter rot area in both locations and weld-in a patch. For what it is worth, I am not going to put a drain hole in the repair patch becuase it seems to be a nice location for future rot. There is at least one other thread here I came across that describes the same problem...I am not sure if it a common issue but it is definately the worst rust area on all of my 'Bessie'.

Sincerely,
