Elk Hunting

My dad has got to be the luckiest guy when it comes to big game drawings in his home state of Washington. At age 80 he was drawn for a any sex moose tag. What does he do? On his 81st birthday he killed the largest bull harvested that year.

A few years ago I got him his disabled certification. This year, my brother put him in for a drawing that only had two tags available for disabled hunters only. You guessed it, thousands of applicants, he got drawn. Plus the season runs from August 1 - March 30, 2011. Now, to top it off, this is a private land controlled hunt with a farmer driving him around till they find an elk the farmer wants off his place. Oh, it doesn't end with him shooting the elk. After it is down. Because he is a disabled hunter. They gut, skin and load the elk for him. He is of-course expected to tip the helpers.

What A Guy. Forgot to mention he will be 88 Oct. 1.

Good for your Dad....post some pictures of his trophy's

I was up in Maine last fall for a bear hunt. The guide there landed three (3!) damage control tags for moose. They got to drive around broccoli farms (if you've never seen one, I highly recommend it) and take their time doing so. Moose were like rabbits up there. All we got to see was the meat pole, but your dad should have a heck of a time.

I had a ranching for wildlife elk tag here in Colorado last January, and picked up a second optional one for kicks. They were all over the ranch, and the ranchers had the same operation - told you where they were, drove the snowmobiles out to help you quarter and haul out, etc. Being too proud (and hoping to avoid the yahoos from Denver there at the same time), we went out on our own to the most remote part of the 50,000 acre ranch and did it ourselves. Imagine three elk down in 24 hours at 0 degrees in January two miles from the nearest snow-covered dirt road. I think we earned them.

Savor the hunt and I hope he has many more in him.

That's great news! I sure hope I can still hunt when I'm that YOUNG! Good Luck.
