My neighor and I will be visiting a friend in the area. He is a Guide and will be taking us on a 3 day 2 night trip down the south fork of the snake. He will then have to service other clients, leaving 3 or 4 days for us to fend for ourselves. We plan on doing some "hike in"fishing in the yellowstone basin...but are open for suggestions....

Does anybody have any?

Bear spray, or a .45. But if Idaho is anything like Colorado, you better have the scars to prove you needed to defend yourself.

will be carrying my Taurus pt145 .45 acp 10 in the mag and one in the pipe... I would hate to have to shoot a bear...but I aint gonna die for one either.

In Alaska we get a KICK out of NewBies. They run out and buy a high powered hand gun thinking this is great bear protection.

I guided in the interior for 5 years. All the guides I worked with carried shotguns. When I fish rivers, I carry a 12 gauge on a sling. It has a 18' barrell - loaded with all OO buckshot.

Mossburg & Winchester make legal models.

There is a bear specific load available for the .410. Midway and others sell them. Just a thought.

Sounds like an awesome trip! I would love to fish that area someday. Post some pics when you get back.

Beautiful area up there! Have a great trip! Can't wait for pics!

I agree that nothing beats a shotgun for self defense ...it is just hard to cast a flyrod and carry one at the same time...my neighbor that is going with me took a brown bear in alaska with his .500 mag revolver, but he is taking a .40 to idaho. That .500 is a little bulky to carry while fishing

I will try to post some pics..I may email them to someone that has gallery permissions to post them up for me.
