Frame Question

Where's the best place to buy a new frame for my 1981 Scrambler? I've only found TDK and Quadratec and from what I can see, TDK makes the ones for Quadratec.

Yep TDK is pretty much the only game in town.

It used to be AFW but the principal of that company sold to one of the welders and he renamed it TDK.

There was Matkins but they seemed to have dropped off of the earth.

There was also a company called MCOR that made a double 1.75" tube frame, but have not heard from them in a while.

Pretty much any mandrel bent frame out there for the Scrambler comes from TDK and is made in Lewiston MT.

Art Morrison Frame in Pa will bend tube to spec but does not make a Jeep specific frame. They might be the ones that bend tube for TDK.

Just watch out with shipping, that is the biggest cost of the frames. Easy to be more than $500.

Look to meet them at Easter Jeep in Moab or some other place that they are going and you can get them to tote frame to the site for free, or look at taking a vacation to MT to help cut down on shipping.

Carl,

Thanks for the information. I emailed TDK and they were very helpful and replied right away, but you were exactly right. Shipping to MI is going to be around $500+. I don't forsee any trips to MT so I guess I'll have to step up and bite the bullet. The kids should be ok without food for a week or so!!

Thanks again,

Andy

The upside is that those frames are really that good.

I have a late AFW one just before it became TDK and it is really nice and sturdy, much better than stock.

Good luck on your rebuild.

i have had my hands on a tdk frame and i can say that that are well worth the $ spent. you cant go wrong w one.

I have a AFW frame under my wife's CJ-5,you won't be disapointed. The only issue I had wwith mine is,there isn't a bracket for the rear brake, hard line to flex line.Last summer I was going to install a heavy duty steering box mount on it,but it wouldn't fit.

Well I'm glad to hear all the good comments about the TDK frames. I got the wiring harness all removed last night and all of the body mounts are free. Some of them spun right off from the body so I guess I'll be in the market for some supports too.

Yeah that tends to be a problem with our rust belt Jeeps. BTW, where you at in Kazoo? I saw a brown Scram up in Parchment a while back sitting next to a garage. I take care of my in-law's 81 and I drive up into town sometimes from Paw Paw, as I live north of the airport. Let me know how the TDK frame works as theirs might need a new frame when it comes time for resto.

Andy,
I live on the East side just before you get into Richland. That brown Scrambler in Parchment has not moved from that spot for atleast 15 years that I know of. I pulled in there one day to take a look and I'm suprised that a strong wind hasn't turned it into a pile of dust. Really bad shape. I'll let you know how the rebuild goes.
