Hi all. I'm getting a little further with my restoration. The rear is done, complete with restored Laredo rims, new brakes and brake guts, and axle bearings/seals. I'm on to the front, checking brakes and bearings and repainting the black OEM locker housing. I have a few questions...are the plastic locking knobs available anywhere and the decals that go on over the tiny screw in the center of it? I have seen the decals in the past but not recently (the JEEP 4x4 decal). My knobs are ok but have whitened and look more like a shade of blue than black. Anyone have suggestions on removing the surface discoloration without destroying the plastic or have a source for inexpensive new ones? As always thanks much in advance.

Sincerely,
Mark

You can get the 4x decals online at a few places, ebay seller cjlaredo is a good place to go to, he has them.

The plastic knobs are not available that I know of, however you can remove them and paint them with a plastic trim black without having to mask off the housing. When you take them off, be carefull not to turn any part of the hub until they are back on. they have a little plastic part that the screw goes into and its easy to strip that part too. the single philips screw that holds them on is under the sticker if it still remains on yours.

Here is a hub I did...also another trick to get the white paint back in the grooves of the "2" and the "4" is to float some paint marker or paint touch up paint in there then wipe off...the white will remain, thin the paint out a bit and experiment with how much to put in..once you get it right, it will remain and fill in the stamped number just like the way it was when they left the factory.

nice trick Eric :woot:
You don't have an easy way to paint the rear wheel caps do you??

Thanks....

In the past, I have used a paint and wipe method for the rears, and sometime last year someone on this site I recall did an excellent job of writing it up w/ pictures etc, with some cool tricks too. Time to search!

Have u tried a small vinyl sticker/sign shop the would be able to make it exact, probly charge about 10 15 bucks, big shops may not wanna be bothered, but a mom and pop shop would most Likely,
Could be a good alternative till you find the Nos

Thanks for the advice...they look great, by the way, jerseyjeeps. I think that was the eBay source I found once but haven't seen them recently. I'll keep watching though. I used the paint and wipe method on my rear caps too and they came out great. It took some patience and had to keep my cloth moist but not wet with thinner to keep control of the paint removal. I appreciate the insight.
