Interesting Light Question - 4 separate filaments or bulbs

I'm getting ready to start wiring up my 1984 scrambler. I started doing the pre-wiring since the tub is off and it's easy to access everything. I'm also getting it set up for all the wiring necessary to have a tow plug in.

My original intent was to wire it as original with the exception of the tow plug. However, I started thinking....(here comes trouble)....

Could I wire the rear lights with 4 bulbs instead of 3? Stock would be 3 bulbs (or filaments) 1)reverse 2)brake/turn 3)running light. Could I wire it with 4 bulbs 1)reverse 2)brake 3)turn 4)running?

I seem to recall that my toyota pick up was done this way.

Anybody do this? Looks like the more modern YJ's and TJ's are wired with 3 filaments.

Do you mean set up for amber rear turn signals? This is how they are set up in Europe and Australia. I've done this conversion on American muscle cars I've brought into Australia.

You can buy European Jeep lights with an amber light strip in the middle. The easiest way to rewire is to use you current brake/ turn signal wire for the turn signal and run a separate wire and ground from your brake switch on the brake pedal.

The European Jeep lights have a different plug. They'll come with the female end, you'll simply have to find or fabricate the male end for your wiring harness.

Yes, exactly what I did...I like the amber turn signals for better visibility and it's just a little different, sometimes a conversation starter. I also have 3 different trailer I pull with the Jeep, all have the amber turn signals also.

So how is it wired then? OEM female plug has 3 wires, the European (including Harbor Freight) have 4 wires.

Can you legally run these on a Jeep in the US???? I live in South Carolina and we don't even require annual inspections. Anyone have issues running these lights on the street?

They are totally legal here. North and South America allow either amber or red turn indicators. Europe and Australasia are more strick, allowing only amber turn signals .
