My De-Rustification Project

By the way, is it possible to remove the engine and transmission together? I assume so, but looking for advice/pointers. To do so, I assume I would need to at least remove the shifters. Anything else?

If you are removing the engine I would just change the seal after removing the tranny too.

Ok. Sounds good. I have not researched the process yet.

Bust since I am moving the engine to the new chassis, I assume it will be easier with the engine exposed on the new chassis rather than still on the old one with the body still there. But as stated, never done it so......

Lots of good info out there. I need to do mine as well. Here's one for the 4.2, but by all accounts the 4.0 is the same:

I did my rear main when I was 20. Finished it on my back with a flashlight, 20 degrees in my parents driveway. Never leaked, was not a hard job. It was an 82 CJ8 with a 258. Had to get it done that night as a snow storm was hours .away and I just put a plow on it

I have done many starters in similar scenarios. Never fun. At least I am not under the same pressure with this.

I did the same, minus the snow coming in. Took me an entire day from dawn till after dark. Finished it up, and it leaked worse when I started it than it did before. Think I mangled the top half the seal putting it in.

That sucks. Thanks for the warning.

I do remember loosening the caps on the main bearing a little and dipping the upper seal in 30W oil so it would stay slick sliding around the crank( something like STP should work too). Also cleaned all of the surfaces with Q-tips and acetone so the RTV would stick. This is certainly one job you want to get right the first time.

Yep, I think if you loosen the bearing caps a little it would help. This was in the days before the interwebs so I was using a Chiltons manual. Needless to say they don't include little tricks like that.

Thanks guys. I saw the video. Made it seem doable. And had some tips like that.

I loosened the main caps and lubed the seal up good before I slid I up and in also.

Well today was somewhat productive. For the way this project is going anyway. Didn't start until after 3 but tried to get something done. So I started to remove the body bolts. Ended up getting all but the two on the crossmember by the gas tank. I will get those tomorrow. And I tried to get the rollbar bolts off since they attach to frame tie ins. What a pain. At least they were not torx. Worked on the pass side. Got one three bolts on each of the two feet. I will have to tackle the last two bolts tomorrow. The dumb frame tie in covers one of the nuts on the rear foot and blocks good access to another. Ugh. I am going to grind the frame tie in off of the frame and it can come with the tub for all I care. Now for the pics.

Someone is on there way over so I will move the front clip to the garage in a few.

Opened up the fiberglass body mounting kit I bought. No instructions and no holes precut in the flat metal bars. Ef them.

Could that be by design? It is a Jeep and every ones a little different?.

On my first cj7 I replaced the body with a fiberglass body and bought the kit. That's when I learned it was a waste. On my present cj7 when I rebuilt it (came with a fiberglass body) I made my own kit. Cheaper and I used beefier angle iron.

Yeah. I was thinking that I could have gotten it done for less. Oh well.

So a little more progress today. Moved the fenders and grill assembly to the garage. Setting on the frame for now as I have limited space. Then started disconnecting stuff needed to move the engine. Like heater hoses, clutch, and a couple of other little things. Tried to loosen more roll bar bolts, but said "screw it". It was snowing and the ground was wet. Shot the sh!t with the friend who was helping me for a while though.
