I don't post here much, but do enjoy reading/gleaning from all the knowledge here.

THANK YOU!!

I recently acquired a 1986 "Last of the Breed" CJ7 from the original owner. I found the following:

"AMC-CJ Series Swing AWAY Spare Tire Lock" AMC P/N 4007257 package in the glove box.

The "key" is in the bag (albeit opened) with documentation and the lug nut "lock" is on the spare tire. It's made by McGard.

Has anyone come across this before?

I have pics I can send for some one to post.

I have had a few of them still installed on CJs I have bought. It's most fun when they key is lost and you have to get the spare tire off

I figured Jersey would post up on this.

This is nothing like what I have. What I have is the type with a "key" that fits into the lug nut itself and then you use a lug wrench on the key.

I have pics I can send to someone to post up.

Mine was chrome like this one... until it rusted/corroded beyond use.

That looks like what you could get at the auto parts places in the 90s. I had them on my Acura. In fact even my 96 Bronco had ones that looked the same. I hated them. The shops would always strip them with the pneumatic tools.

Exactly. I had them on the 78 F150 of my dad's I drove in HS in the early/mid 80's.

The reason I started this post is I am curious about what I found. If you look at the pictures, the packaging the "key" was in is torn just enough for it to slip out. I know anything is possible, but I bought the Jeep from an older couple that bought it new in 1986.

This forum has the most knowledgeable folks out there and I thought someone here could help shed light on this for me. I haven't been able to find the part number shown on the packaging and the registration card still in the package. Matching this part number to a picture would really help.

And they are completely useless. My son lost his wheel lock key for his Subaru. A few sacrificial cheap sockets later and they were replaced with regular lug nuts.

Don't know of that style ever being installed new. No reference for that part number that I can find either. Perhaps Jeep sold them at the parts counter? Agree with the others about them being easy to defeat (they sell a tapered socket with reversed threads made just for that purpose).

I can't tell you how many of those locks I have drilled out on spare tires of jeeps I have bought because I had no key. Usually drill out the stud and hit it with a hammer to finish it off.

Okiekid my 84 came with one of those when I bought it new. It was already on the spare with no bag. Many years later the lug nut was misplaced and the lock became
