Were the cj's single stage or BC/cc from the factory? What type of paint was it? I think I've picked oriental red for my 8 currently hugger orange peeling over factory white.

Both. Some colors were single stage and some were bc/cc. I think that oriental red is single stage, put I am not 100 percent certain. Hopefully someone else can confirm.

And the paint is tough as anything. 20 years ago when I was working on my first Scrambler, I was stripping the paint. DA sander did not do much. Sandblaster was not very quick
Ended up using Captain Lee's spray and strip which worked very good.

Anyone have a single stage system they recommend? From etch to top coat. I actually prefer the look of single stage on older jeeps over a Bc/cc. The paint shop guy is clearly against it and wouldn't even help pick something out.

Guessing the metallics were bc/cc right? I've got one in Medium green metallic, and one that was either dark honey metallic or dark brown metallic........

I had my 8 done in a single-stage, with no metal. I did not want the Jeep to look "new". I wanted it to look like a 30-year-old truck that was perfectly preserved. Fortunately, the painter got it - even added "I hear ya, some guy just restored his '58 Caddy and had me paint in a 2008 Cadillac color... just didn't look right".

I walked the isles at the Jeep museum in Auburn Hills. The Jeeps were perfect, but the paint didn't look like today's paints. I wanted that look on my CJ.

I wanted this look, but in blue:

The painter nailed it. He was open to the type, e.g. no metal, single-stage, but adamant on the brand... which I don't remember now.

Not necessarily. It was more of a change of the technology at the time vs what color got what. In the 70s all paints even metallic were single stage. Then in our scrambler years as single stage came about colors started to get it but not all. I believe by 1985 then all paints were BC CC. Back in the day it was hard to single stage a metallic cause if it ran the metal would bunch up in that area. My 1978 wagoneer has it in "golden ginger metallic"....And it's really bad on the 1983 SR in copper brown metallic, with huge drips around he hinges and tailgate but that was AMC quality control back then.
