removal of rear brakes

Back in November got a 1984 cj8 mostly stock with 258, with 4 inch lift with 31 inch BFG. I need some advice on how to remove the rear brakes. I have tried to get them off with hammer and wd-40. How hard can I hit them without destoying them. I broke a small piece off of the left side, and discovered that some one else has done the same on the left.
thanks

save yourself the busted knuckles!
Rent a puller for $7 . Made my PIA a lot easier. ( and make sure your shoes are " backed off " .)

Sorry for the stupid question, but, does it still have the stock 2pc axles in the AMC 20? If so, some have 3 screws holding the drum to the hub, did you remove them? I did the same thing on an '84 CJ 7, the face of the drum was covered with dirt and corrosion and I didn't even see the screws till it was too late:(
