My body guy ask me if I wanted single stage or base coat clear coat paint. I have 83 CJ7 Laredo. First I would like to know what it came from the factory. Next I would like to know the pros and cons to either one. He will be using PPG paint if it matters. Thanks in advance for yalls help. Gary

I don't know for sure but what's left of my factory paint looks like single stage. When I repaint I'm going with a base clear

Well here is a little information:

That was origionally posted by Polarfire here: https://www.cj-8.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29603

This is a site that also might help:

This guy has some good info too: <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/fuGjv75Qskk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> At about 14:30 he talks about Single Stage acrylics.

I am learning myself.

My 1984 has single. When I repainted it I went with base coat clear coat. The difference over the original is unbelievable. Mine had the original paint and stickers and was badly faded.

These days with a good paint it boils down to what you are painting, from what I have learned. If you are painting a solid color, the PPG single stage is all you need. The painting process is simpler and the guy selling the paint tells me it will last as good as the basecoat/clearcoat and saves $. However, if you are spraying a pearl or metalic color then go with the basecoat/clearcoat approach to get the depth and some ability to make minor repairs later. This is just what I have been told over the years. My Jeep is going single-stage since it is solid Jamiacan Beige, but my Triumph went BC/CC since it was painted a Dodge Viper blue pearl.

Sincerely,
Mark
