Sr4 question

Does anyone know specifically what the weak points of the sr4 are? I'm in the mood currently to keep my as 81 original as possible. I plan on rebuilding it and was wondering if there was any way I could help prevent it from breaking. Is it something that cryogenic treating could help?
 
I do not know the weak points but I do not think it would be worth the money cryo would cost.

I just replaced my '81's SR4 with a superior T-5 tranny :rotfl:... I still have the SR4 sitting on my garage floor if you need anything. The reverse and 3-4 syncros were both going out which is why I replaced it. It was actually cheaper to replace than have it rebuilt, plus I ended up with an overdrive.

I hate the thought of pushing down to go into reverse, it reminds me of a VW.
 
I've got a spare just in case. I'm most likely keeping close to stock 4 cylinder power and close to stock tire size. I plan on rebuilding myself so cost is about 125$ cryo treating if it would help would probably cost about that much.
 
Weak spots on SR4:

One is offset shift set up. Bushings wear and the shifter gets sloppy.

Another, and the biggest, is the ball bearings used on input/output shafts and the case bosses they live in. The ball bearings are weaker than roller bearings and the bosses are thinner walled with less webbing so they distort easier.

It is just a light duty design. Only way to make it last longer is to treat it like one.
 
How many miles on you Jeep wit that set up and was it ever out for repairs before? Reason I ask this is because if you are going all stock then a nice simple rebuild may be all you need to have a worry free transmission behind the 4 cylinder.
 
It's got 64000 on it. The shifter is a little sloppy. I know they had a plastic bushing in the shifter that wore out and made them sloppy. It came with a replacement. I only got to drive it 100 miles before I decided to do "a quick paint job" 5 years ago.
 
It still shifted good though. I do wish it came with a 5 speed though. Some day I'd like to drive cross country with it. I'm not willing to swap it out unless my sr4 dies because I want to keep it original. I'll just have to drive slower. Looks like my top speed is going to be 60-65 with 3.73s and stock sized tires. But I could buy some 15x7 and get some bigger tires for the "rubber overdrive" effect.
