Hey guys. I have an 83 Scrambler with a 4 speed manual transmission. For quite a while, there has been a lot of noise coming from the transmition (kind of a growing). The sound goes away when I press the clutch. I don't know much about transmittions, but I assume it is probably a bearing of some sort. Can anyone help me diagnose this problem? Here is a YouTube link showing the sound. Thanks.

Cany get the video to work, but if it goes away when you push in the clutch look to the throw out bearing

Ok. Thanks for the info!
I will look into the process of replacing the throw out bearing. I don't have any experience with transmittions, but I feel like I am fairly handy. If it looks like too much, I will seek help professionally. Thanks again!

First rule of Jeeps - a simple job replacing a part is never as simple as it seems. If you're replacing the throw out bearing, you might also consider:
1) Replacing the whole clutch
2) Rebuilding the transmission and
3) Replacing any wearable parts like transmission mounts and bushings

Especially if you've owned the jeep for a while and don't know the last time any of those things were done.

The throw out bearing is a $10 part that takes about 10hrs to replace for a novice, then another 8 to do it again because you messed up the first time. It's good to consider anything else that might need doing while tackling that big of a job.

Second rule of Jeeps - if there's an adjustment you can make to get a little more life out of a part before doing a job like that, it's worth considering. You may get away with adjusting your push rod length (if it's OEM mechanical), by making it just a touch longer. Be sure to look over the mechanical linkage for any signs of wear.

T 176 Is known for the front bearing to go bad, I have one here in the floor that you can hear when you just spend the input shaft

The noise goes away when you push the throwout bearing in because the transmission quit spinning, that’s my theory

And you can change that bearing without getting into the transmission, I may be able to send a picture

Guys,
Thanks for all the info and advice! I got this jeep in 1993 (jr. In high school) so I know the rules 1 & 2 of owning a jeep are true. My son is 14 and I hope to have it reliable enough for him to drive in high school.

That’s awesome. I also had a Scrambler when I was in high school… Wish I still had it

There is a snap ring on that bearing and I was able to modify a bearing puller to grab that snap ring and remove that front bearing

My high school had a few olive drab colored Scramblers the for grounds crew. I got out in '91 so they weren't that old then.

I graduated in 90 myself. My Scrambler was an 81, with 28,000 miles on it. Like a fool I sold it. But I wanted a 77 Chevy half ton four-wheel-drive. Though the Chevy was a great truck, I have missed my scrambling ever since.

If you have a T176 this is what it looks like torn down and cleaned. Got some new parts today from Novak. Never planned on spending this kind of money on an old used transmission but had already bought parts to convert it to hydro clutch. Live & learn. Hopefully going back together tomorrow or Saturday image.jpegimage.jpeg

Nice! Yeah, costs just seem to keep adding up. Lot of parts. Good luck!
