Roof Rack

Decided I wanted to add a roof rack to carry my camping gear and kayaks. After looking everywhere I could on the net, I determined I needed to build my own.....Racks are hard to find for Scramblers! I decided to go with 1" emt conduit for 90% of the rack and 1" rigid for the supporting frame underneath. I still need to have it powder coated (black) and mount some rails to allow it to slide off the back, also making a canopy. I'll post some more pics when I get it done.

BTW the total cost so far is about $40-$50 dollars, with an estimated $100 in powder coating.......much better than $700!

Brent, That really looks great . You did that yourself ? How long did it take you ? Makes me want a hobby that requires a roof rack. Looks outstanding even before the powdercoat. Chris

Thanks, It took about a day to build, fun project though. I'll post some finished pictures, in case anyone is looking for some ideas to build themselves one.

:popcorn: I am liking it ! I am just north of you a couple of turns... Hmmmm :smokin::smokin:

I am definitely interested in how this turns out and any build details. Yes please post pics & provide details when you get it done. I just bought a Scrambler & will pick it up in 2 weeks. ihave Top-five roof rack off my TJ Iam selling & like how it ties into the rear by the frame without drilling holes in the body. I would like to explore combining the two. Yours looks SHARP!

Wow...that's great looking! Cool design!

Very impressive!

Outstanding job! Only a day?? "Ya gotta be good to make it look easy"...

The rack is great. Would look really good on a lifted Postal or Overlander with large tires. Would give it that Expedition look.

Expedition???

Somebody say expedition? haha.
Man...That looks great!!! I wish I could knock mine out in a day...sigh. So the conduit you used is galvanized, right? did you not have issues cleaning it all before welding? Pleas post more pics!!

Pics

Thanks everyone. It really was simple to build and does'nt require alot of fab skills. A 1" conduit bender from home depot and few sticks of conduit and your off. The galvanized metal I only cleaned the welds before taking to powder coat. I did use rigid 1" galvanized metal for the three support beams, the rest is emt. here's some more pics after the powder coat and with the kayaks on top. I added a little shovel to attach to the side.:twocents:

more pics

I'll get some actual photos of the build process and deminsions this week.

Just the frame

Here's a pic of just the frame, the rack part just slides off the rails.

Rack

Jeff,
I can make you a rack but the shipping would probably be pretty expensive. Are you coming to Ouray Co. in July?
