Gary's '81 Scrambler

4miles,
Thanks for the pic! Yes, those brackets are still in place on my rig. I'm wondering about the two front holes of each bracket that go straight down thru the floor of the tub? In my pic, the two empty holes. Anything inside the cab attached to those two holes, or just a bolt in each hole? Many thanks!

They were just 2 torx bolts originally securing each bracket by weld nuts underneath on the support/channel for the floor.

Thanks! Torx bolts just re-installed. Have a good evening and thx for the speedy replies/help.

Headed to the paint shop. Sure is gonna be a big expense! I forgot how expensive a "show quality" paint job is. Damn! My painter is well-known for spectacular work, especially in the hot rod community with all the local street rod guys and restoration places. He said the price for a "nice paint job" and a "perfect paint job" was about $800 difference. I opted for the more expensive option. What the heck; I've tried to do it right up until this point.

By the way, the tub was soda-blasted and had NO dents, waves, or signs of previous damage. The spots you see of Bondo? That's where the previous owner decided to install diamond plate (everywhere!) and used dozens of pop rivets to do so. I had to weld in the holes, then dress them and finish them with a skim coat of Bondo. I hate diamond plate (at least on any of my vehicles) and it was a pain to repair all the holes.

Paint shop is going to preb the tub, then shoot a self-etching primer inside and under the tub. Before they shoot my final paint color, he suggested I take it to Line-X to shoot the bottom of the tub. This way the folks at Line-X aren't prone to messing up fresh paint when they shoot the bottom. After the red is applied, it's back to Line-X to squirt the interior of the tub.

Four weeks until the paint and Line-X is done. Can't wait!!!

I'm going with a Dodge Chrysler color, called Tor Red! You'll see it on the new Chargers and Daytonas. It's the brightest red I could find, and I love the color. And wouldn't you know, that any red is one of the most expensive colors (expensive pigments)? Just my luck!

Me too! I'm working on refurbishing the steering column, top, etc. This way I'll occupy my time, and also be ready to install the remaining parts when it gets home from paint !

I decided to change my air cleaner. I saw this Holley air cleaner on another vehicle and HAD to have one!

Rollbar / Shoulder Belts

Since my Scrambler is an '81, it didn't have the shoulder belts. I wanted them for not only safety, but so the cops don't have another reason to pull me over (ie: "why aren't you wearing your seatbelt"?)

So in another thread, someone was kind enough to measure to the exact center of their rollbar, where the factory inserts are located on later models. I machined these steel inserts and tapped them out to accept 7/16-20 bolts.

Then I drilled 1" holes into the exact spots on the rollbar and welded them in. Worked PERFECTLY! Here is a photo of the inserts, and I will post photos later of the finished product:

i think i am just going to run a harness :D

nice air cleaner. i think i liked the other one. but whatever floats your boat

Wow!

So all of my parts are at the painter. I had agreed to give the painter a draw if he needed it for materials, before completion. He's a buddy and doing a superb job so far! He calls me today and said he could use a small draw against the final balance. I go over there and understand why: he showed me the receipt, his wholesale cost, for ONE, yes ONE gallon of my red paint...

$797.00 !

Isn't that crazy? He said my color (bright red) was one of the most expensive colors to buy. Ya think? Geez! And that was just the one gallon of red. No other materials, clear coat, etc. I went with a bright red that's on the new Dodge Chargers, caller Torred Red.

Unreal on the paint cost! But hey, I start getting parts back next week! :woot:

HOLY &^%^%$^%$^%!!!!!

I paid $147 less than that for my SCRAMBLER!!

apparently, Red and a couple other colors have sky rocketed since the tsunami in Japan. a pigment required for these colors was produced only in Japan and that factory was heavily damaged or destroyed.

guess i'm waiting to pain the Scrambler!!!

Paint Shop Drive-By...

It's getting exciting! I was heading to another appointment this morning and drove through the parking lot of my painter....he was painting parts today, and I didn't want to go in and distract him. Anyway, I spotted Jeep parts awaiting the clear / buffing!

Everything is now painted! Since this is a basecoat / clearcoat, the paint is being sanded with 1000 grit paper, then buffed to an ultra-high shine!

My painter told me he was working all weekend to finish it because "I have red Jeep parts all over my shop". I also had him spray a liner on the entire underside of the Jeep....it's a process where he adds my red paint to a neutral liner base. The underside is a nice textured red, exactly matching the tub paint. It looks AWESOME!

I'll take the tub straight from my painters, over to LineX. They will spray the inside of the tub. I know some folks don't like the LineX in the tub, but hey, I think it rocks....and I'll never sell the Scrambler :)

It is getting exciting!

Found this WAY cool diagram over on another forum (in one of his posts, he said he never minded anyone benefiting from his photos/restoration). So I'm posting it here too. The guy that made the diagram had a GREAT restoration thread then it just quit a about 3-years ago with no more posts? I know the diagram is going to come in handy for not only me, but hopefully for someone else who may follow my build thread?

She's :smokin: hot !

Thanks, Red Mistress! Bad storms and hail here in the DFW Metroplex today, or else I'd be lugging home Jeep parts!
