AMC20 - what to do?

I've got a line on a 72 Dana 44. Not sure where the spring perches are at but it's got everything else desirable as far as I can tell.

Sounds like a plan. The 44 is geared for 3.73s, but I'll have time and opportunity to think about it.

Thanks all.

Sorry, just now reading this thread. If there is anything near me you need me to pick up and hold just let me know!

This is exactly why this is the best forum out there. Also why I will be going to the Scramble this year too. Where else can you find a more helpful, great bunch of guys?

Have you considered swapping both axles - replacing the NT 30 with a WT 30 to match the WT 44?? The 30s are cheap and pretty easy to find. The wider stance would be a significant bonus for a daily driver.

I have thought about it, maybe sometime in the future. The 44 I'm looking at is a NT, though. Fortunately I'm not in a rush so I can try to plan these things out...

I have a WT 30 that I'd sell. I don't know what gears are in it. It is currently under my parts Scrambler.

Yep, get a WT Dana 30, and run spacers on the rear wheels.

I picked up a WT Dana 30 with 3.31's, new brakes (rotors and pads still in the boxes, and original brakes still on the axle), and new Powertrain/ private label Milemarker hubs for $125. Buying axles ready to go is a lot cheaper than trying to regear.

The more I think about it the more I think the 2.73s are actually OK. Turns out I've got a T177 - which has the lower 1st gear than the T176. That helps me out a little with the strain on starting up, giving the transmission a break.

Thoughts? I might just pick up a set of one-piece rears for the AMC20 and sell off all the crap I've accumulated to this point. :banghead:

My opinion is yes. Until you come across a cheap set of WT's with 3.31 or 3.73 locally.

That's what I was thinking. And possibly as low as 3.07, but in any case I'm OK and not in a rush.
