Stainless Steel Fuel Lines - got trouble

Hey all,

I had ordered a complete brakeline stainless kit and installed it without a hitch. I thought, what the heck, while I'm doing this complete restore, may as well do stainless fuel lines.

I went ahead and purchased 25' rolls of 3/8 (inlet) and 5/16 (return and vapor) and bent them the way I needed and mounted them to the frame as desired. I then pulled them off to put some ends on them and low-and-behold my problems begin.

Seems that stainless is much harder than I thought it would be to put a nice bung on the end. As a matter of fact, i haven't been able to put a flare on the end even. So, how the heck do I put a bubble or some sort of shape so I can connect my hoses to it? I realize that the TBI fuel injection system is pretty low pressure at about 12psi, but shouldn't I be putting a bung on there so the hoses stay put when connected to the tank, the fuel filter, and to the throttle body? Obviously won't need that for a connection to the cannister, but yes on the return line too right?

How have you guys that have run stainless done it? Can I get away with just double clamping it? Any ideas?

A single flare (bubble) will work good for connecting to flex hose, but for low pressure, you can get away with using hose clamps. What kind of flare tool are you using? Stainless is hard stuff, but with a good tool it should be doable. I know that some parts stores will flare lines for you if you bring them in.

If you get one of the good flaring tools that had been discussed before, doing a bubble or a double flare with stainless is no issue.

Thanks all...I went ahead and purchased the Eastwood tool. I can see me using this a lot on many projects. Glad to see there is an option. I called at least 10 local shops and none of them would touch the stainless stuff.

You’re in Arlington, IAFFCJ(Jake) is in Manassas...that doesn’t seem to difficult to have taken care of.

Your more than welcome to bring the lines by and we can flair them at the house if you need. Didn’t even notice you were that close or would have suggested that earlier. However I do not think you will be disappointed with your purchase that tool has been one of the best I have purchased for sure.
